How do you get over the boredom/monotony?

I'm in a slump right now in my district nurse job. It's so dull. What do you guys do to get over the humps? Keep in mind that I don't do the day to day hands on work that much anymore. I oversee the health office nurses and case manage the more complicated kids and a lot of that work is already in place now since we're 3 months into the school year. I'm all caught up with my SPED evaluations. I've updated the Resource Manual that we have in each health office that the nurses use as a guide for what to do in different situations. I've made a Power Point presentation on fractures and what to do when you suspect one that I will be presenting in 2 weeks (a requirement for my performance evaluation each year :sarcastic:). My health office nurses are amazing and rarely need me to step in for anything so today I received zero phone calls and zero emails. I literally had nothing to do. I cleaned my desk and then worked on my NRP (neonatal resuscitation program) recertification which I have to do next month. I haven't been able to pick up any NICU shifts this month (believe it or not they are fully staffed!) to remind what a sweet gig this is! I'm getting desperate to run back to the NICU! Quick! Talk me off the ledge please!

Really. Do you make house calls?

Absolutely! I love to travel!:nurse:

How about rotating through the trenches? Offer to spell a school nurse so they can do some personal development or something?

YES! We have 2 float nurses in our district who are usually busy covering absences and emergencies, but when one comes by to work with me it's like Christmas! I'm able to get so much of the paperwork done and just clean this crazy place and I LOVE having someone to talk to who gets it!

As someone above said, the gift of time really is precious!

I haven't taken a lunch break in 4 years so...you're more than welcome to come down here & let me catch up on those.

I had a BSN student observing the other day and oh my lanta! Having someone to talk to was heaven. It was by far the most boring day (of course), I had half the amount of students I usually do. And she's an ER trauma nurse lol

It did open her eyes to what all we do. But seriously, I just need another person to talk to.

This is why I long to find another job. I feel so bored and useless on these days where I basically sit for 7+ hours doing NOTHING! I am alone, and in the back of the school, so it's just me. I have tons of games downloaded on my cell, and I am an expert at looking crap up online

Believe me I get it but then I remind myself of all the reasons why I left the hospital and those reasons would still be there if I went back. At least with this job I am home every evening, weekend and holiday and THREE MONTHS OFF during the summer.

Today was better. I did an online CEU course (I was 0.6 credits short for my renewal in March!) and covered the health office for my school nurse so she could go do a presentation about teeth brushing for the 1st graders. :)

Have you ever considered going back to school? Prime time to do tons of reading and writing with an online class.

Come to my school!!!

I actually have looked into doing a certificate course for RN Case Management since that is an area I have thought about exploring also. :)

Just an idea but could you set up and run prevention teaching at the different schools?
