How to File a Complaint against BON

Published

Out of curiosity, has anyone ever filed a complaint against the board of nursing or is there a way to file a complaint and with who would you file a complaint?

No, I haven't. Contacting an attorney in your state who deals with Administrative Law would be a good idea. There IS a way to file a complaint but after awhile of looking online I couldn't find out how but I'm sure you can.

Hopefully this will help you too:

You'd have to figure out where the Board sits in a State's hierarchy of Divisions and Departments. Like any normal workplace dispute, I figure you'd usually have to go 'one step up' to start.

Then I was thinking the State's Attorney General's Office?. But like PP posted, I'd go the lawyer route - you'd be facing some 'big guns' so I'd want to have the best knowledgeable representation if I were to take on the BON.

That would NOT be a fight I'd want to undertake. Gives me chills think about it!

I have spoken to a lawyer. She is backed up with similar cases. I mostly just want to be able to file a complaint. They are very rude, for example, just hanging up when they don't know how to answer your question. Well after I asked if there was someone else there that could answer my question. I was asking for honest help and was not being rude.

I don't think I'd put my hat in that ring. I def wouldn't for rudeness. It happens. I would move on from it. Why would you put a target on your back?

Oh and what was your question? Did you try asking on here? A lot of the nurses here are very knowledgable and helpful!

There's an option on the home page of my BON website to click on complaint.

O, it's much worse than that. It was just a small example of my most recent interaction with them. My last workplace is refusing to file the paperwork for my license renewal, so the board suspended my license without informing me. Now they will not give it back until this place fills it out and will not even send them a letter to inform them it's required and legally the workplace should do this. I had to go to a nursing program similar to this site to inform me of a lawyer to contact since the board just said it's my problem not there's and hung up. I found out my license was suspended due to a job I applied for calling and informing me I didn't even have a license. Pretty sure they legally have to inform you when they take your license. They took it 4 months ago and I had no clue. I've been a nurse for years and have never had a problem with the renewal process.

That's to file a complaint about a workplace or nurse etc.

I was just asking them if I needed to get a lawyer due to the refusal or if there was some other way to go about it. She said she didn't know, so I asked if I could speak to someone who did and bam hung up.

Found a law firm devoted specifically to this. In all honesty, I would not go that route as I don't have the time or money with my kids, but I just think it is sad that they can treat nurses the way they do. The horror stories I've read about and the cases that these lawyers are working on are down right dirty and dispicable. Wish I could take more action to help the field, but that's government for you. Figured I'd find more nurses here fighting this battle, but guess I will continue to follow the group I found online.

What kind of paperwork does your previous workplace need to file in order for your license to be renewed? It is not the BON's role to advise nurses if they need to hire lawyers, their role is to protect the public, not the nurse.
