Do Females View males in the Nursing Profession Positively or as a Negative spectrum?
Just Simple Nice discussion !
I love my male coworkers. They bring a balance to our unit that is just awesome. I previously worked in ICUs that had fewer male nurses, but in my current ER I'd say there's a good percentage. Although, I'd always be grateful for more! There are a couple guys at my work who are probably hands down some of the best nurses I'd ever work with. I do hope the stereotypes go away, I think with time they will. :)
I love male nurses -- I'm married to one!
Seriously, I really don't care about the gender of my co-workers, only that we all work as a team. My unit is pretty evenly divided -- half men and half women and to tell you the truth, I really don't care about anyone's sexual orientation, either. I'm not looking for a date, so it doesn't matter. (OK, I'll confess to being curious about the guy who keeps switching from gay to straight to gay -- and wondering why he just doesn't shut up about it already.)
I have to say, I'm very pleased that the "women are catty" contingent of misogynists hasn't taken over this thread yet!
Never any problems really, in fact most women I meet (non-nurses) think its really cool and like that I am actually in a profession and not a dead beat.
I take that back, only slight issue I had was in nursing school for OB. Our instructor was really old school and it was obvious she didn't feel men belonged in L&D or any maternity floor.
Our instructors LOVE our male students. One embarrasses herself daily by how much she fawns over them. They're a great group, but sheesh - your desperation for male attention shouldn't spill over to your job as an educator. But I digress.
I love/hate my male coworkers for the same reasons I either love or hate my female coworkers. Gender doesn't really play into it. Ain't nobody got time for that.
There's a guy at work who brags that he rarely changes briefs on pts because he can usually sweet talk one of the women into doing it for them. That kind of crap ****** me off and doesn't work with me, but obviously there can be SOME perks to working in a female dominated area.
The other day I was at one of my girlfriends family events and a relative of hers who doesn't know me too well went to me "So how have you been? You're working as a male nurse right?" So I responded "Well yeah, ever since the operation.." He was embarrassed, and I thought myself very clever. The end.[/quote']Clever
