How do Female View Males in the Nursing Profession?
IMO,If I am sick,I don't care if my nurse is a man or a woman, although when it comes to female problems I would probably feel more comfortable with a gay man than a straight man,I'm just weird that way.

"Don't bother talking to residents with dementia.....
I've seen some things too since I've been in CNA classes, things that I did not like, not so much physical abuse but mental, mocking residents, teasing them in condescending ways.Talking over residents at the dinner table, ignoring the fact that they are actually sitting next to a living, breathing human being. One CNA actually referred to the residents as "crazy old ladies".My grandmother is also in a home for dementia patients,I shiver at the thought of someone treating her that way, what they don't know is my grandmother was one of the strongest, most caring people I have ever met, that she took in many many young pregnant girls over the years when their parents kicked them out in the street,my grandmother cared from them and their newborns,I wonder if they knew if it would make a difference:(

"Don't bother talking to residents with dementia.....
"Whether you're providing comfort and reassurance or ensuring your patient's safety, never for a second underestimate your patients with dementia. Whether or not they come out of their confusion like mine did or they talk to you all night about the wedding they just came from 40 years ago, they are indeed worthy of respect and still have something to teach/contribute as long as we're willing to hear them" I agree 100% totally deserving of respect!

"Don't bother talking to residents with dementia.....
I've seen a snack tray but sometimes we don't get to see the care plan to make sure that I'm not giving them something that they should not have,I will ask the charge nurse, thank you for your advice!

"Don't bother talking to residents with dementia.....
Actually we were in the process of feeding the residents that cannot feed themselves,I had fed this lady before so I knew that she could communicate. This resident was just wheeled to the dining room while sleeping and my fellow student looked at me and said she won't wake up to eat,I said talk to her and nudge her a little bit, she'll wake up,that's when the Rn told her not to bother talking to her,she told her to put some food on her lip and that would wake her up,but the student kept talking to her, that's when the RN told her not to bother talking to her she can't understand what your saying, but I believe that she could. She woke up at the end of dinner and by then the student had actually stopped trying to talk to her.ALso,if a resident doesn't eat at specified times, are they offered something later? What if they don't want to eat at noon can they eat and 1:00 instead?

"Don't bother talking to residents with dementia.....
I've had the same experience with residents,I decided if I ever get so burned out that I don't take the time to even try to converse with them,I'll find another career before I stop attempting to communicate with them,it was just really sad that a RN (trainer) would tell a student not to bother, really very sad:(

"Don't bother talking to residents with dementia.....
they don't understand what your saying anyway",I heard an RN tell one of the students from my CNA program this.I was shocked that she would make such a statement, and it's absolutely untrue.I did not argue but told my fellow student that dementia patients can understand but may not be able to communicate.I'm wondering where in the world gave her the idea that dementia patients can't hear or communicate???????I have seen for myself,(grandmother has alzheimer's)but she can communicate and so can most of the residents that I help care for,it just takes them more time to answer.SMH!!!!!!!

Piercings and Nursing
I'm in a CNA program now,we were told by our instructor we are not allowed piercings other than in the ears, tattoos have to be covered, hair cannot be down or "weird" colors. We do our clinicals at local LTC homes.Im sure all CNA programs have similar dress codes. Before I started the program I was just about ready to get a new wrist tattoo, luckily I didn't or I would have had to invest in a case of band aids!

Penn Valley LPN enrollment with classes
That I don't know,I haven't gotten that far, still stuck at the pre req stage,it would probably be best if you ask to talk to an academic advisor at Penn valley, they can answer those questions.

Penn Valley LPN enrollment with classes
You really need to fill out an app for FAFSA,then go to Penn Valley and take the Compass test,it covers reading, math and spelling, you'll get your results after you finish the test. You have to have a certain percentage to pass so that you won't have to take a bunch of pre reqs,I have to to take Algebra but I've been out of school for 22 years. They will tell you what you what classes if any that you will need to take.

Penn Valley LPN enrollment with classes
I also applied and was accepted, I got the email anyway, which doesn't really mean squat I don't think.I took the Compass test at Penn Valley, failed miserably on the math section and have to take Algebra pre reqs.I am taking them at Maple Woods Community college most of next year so I won't actually start the LPN program until 2015.Maple Woods advisors are much more helpful than Penn Valley(my opinion).

Do Mean Girls make Mean Nurses
Bullying in my opinion has always been a problem, but with all the resources we have now, internet,Facebook,it's just more public then it has ever been. The bullying commercials make me cringe, saying to myself WHAT IS WRONG WITH THESE PEOPLE?I walked off my job of 9 years,2 months ago because I was being bullied and management refused to do anything about this particular woman, she had been employed there for 20 plus years and was consistent with her bullying,(there were many others that she bullied). My last week there I decided my career was going to end in one of three ways,I was going to quit,I would be fired,or I would go to jail for physically attacking her,I am not a mean person but this woman had pushed me to the point that I curled my hands in a fist whenever she would get anywhere near me,I dreaded going to work.I had never ever walked out of any job in my 25 years of employment, but I felt I really had no other option.I was told by a former coworker that after I walked out she was reprimanded for bullying other employees, and given extra work to keep her busy so that she wouldn't have so much time to invest in her bullying.Shes a sad sad woman, and I have moved on to bigger and better things!Leaving there was the best thing I've ever done:smug:oh and I sold heavy truck part,my other employees consisted of 99% men,and I never had a problem with any of them.

How do you deal with classmates disrespecting you?
I guess at 40 I'm naive,i would have thought that at these women's age they would have grown out of the bullying stage, they are insecure that's why they gang up on you, they would probably never do it alone but as a pack they feel superior. You said there was one lady that was nice to you,can you ask your instructor to move you closer to her and maybe pair you two up,the other lady wouldn't even have to know that you asked it be paired up with her.I just don't understand their thinking, part of nursing is compassion, which they obviously don't have:no:

Struggling in math
I start taking my pre reqs in January,I graduated 22 years ago with basic math, don't think I even took algebra at the time.My community college offers free math tutoring for their students, maybe you could ask an advisor if your school offers tutoring also.
