How does it feel to have a Foley insertion?

Published

I've always wondered, but never wondered enough to try it for myself. Lol does it hurt? Is there a stretching, burning or stinging sensation? Ive had a UTI before, so I can only imagine having a foley inserted feels like those last little painful trickles of pee during a UTI. Can someone enlighten me please?

As a man I think it's about an 8 out of 10 on the "please dear God kill me" scale......

It was mildly-moderately uncomfortable with a burning sensation. Nothing too bad for me. I would say it was not scream or tear worthy. The pain I had was about on par with an IV insertion and I was wide awake and not in any other pain at the time.

I'd say a lot of it depends on the skill level of the person inserting the foley. I've had five surgeries in the last five years and needed filets for several of them. It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't the most pleasant procedure, either.

I doubt filets would help much, LOL. That a was obviously supposed to be "foleys."

I had it done while I was in preterm labor and getting a Mag drip. My contractions weren't that painful... so I felt every bit of the Foley insertion. It was .... very unpleasant... and uncomfortable the day or so I had it in.

I have never heard of a Uroject before - didn't even know there was a product available to help numb men up before a foley insertion. No where I've worked has stocked it. You learn something new every day!

Its just viscous lidocaine. You can make them with a 10cc syringe and one of those 10-20cc cups of viscous lido.

It WAS an interesting mental image though...

As far as Urojects, we had a Urology PA tell us that the lidocaine takes over 20 minutes to numb up the urethra! And that is purely for placebo effect. Unless the nurse is nice and waits for it to kick in.

I believe it because I once inserted a foley in a man after giving a lidocaine bullet and he screamed like hell. (UTI)

What do you mean placebo?

To make the patient think they were given some magic fix for the pain but in reality, no difference.

So, unless it marinates for 20 minutes, it's not worth it?

According to the urology expert!
