How far WOULD you and DID you travel for nursing school?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

The nursing school I would love to go to is about 1-1.5 hour drive and maybe 2 hours in the winter. I'm going to give it a test drive next week and I can possible speculate (I know not a good thing) how far the winter drive may be (I despise the snow).

The school offers pre-req.'s during 2 classes during an 8 week session (2 semester sessions with one nursing course each semester); however very expensive. If I take the pre-req's at the CC the classes would be 16 weeks each. My chemistry class at the CC was 16 weeks and I almost lost it (I took two grad courses during this time as well; I know, crazy). I did pass all courses with a B.

I just want to know how far did you drive to complete nursing school AND was it worth it? I just need a reality check and to make a decision soon. FYI, I'm a single mom in her early 40's. Time is not on my side. :)

Thanks for responding.

My friend was planning to rent an apartment near the school and I was going to share it with her before she had to move out of state. So my poor car got the brunt of the abuse.

I live about an hour & 10 minutes give or take depending on traffic and road conditions (curvy country highway). I've been driving there for 2 years taking prereqs and so far I've managed. I've actually come to like the drive--gives me time to relax and think... and wake up before I get to school.

It does take a toll on cars though. The trick is to buy cheap, older model japanese cars. They last for years- and when they do fail, they are cheap to fix or replace. Better yet, get two of them so you have a backup. :D God bless toyota and honda.

My school is one hour away, one way. I kinda enjoy the drive....No classes right now, and I miss the time alone....in the quiet.

I completed the first three years of my degree at the college in my city (about a 10 minute drive) but my final year, I had a 3.5 hour drive!

I just got accepted to the university and *fingers crossed* if I get into the School of Nursing, I would be only about 15 minutes away from campus. But even if it were 1hr + away, I probably would do it because it is that important to me and our future. Good luck to everyone--I admire your motivation!

I'll be traveling about 75 miles each way 5 days/week for about 18 months for nursing school. I think it will be well worth it though. My car's only a few years old and has less than 60,000 miles on it so I think it will be able to take it.

UVA Grad Nursing,

FULL Scholarship!!!??? May I please enroll in your school? :)

Thank you all so very much for your responses. Reading all the posts has encouraged me to stay motivated and make additional sacrafices toward a better future for myself and my son.

SecondGenRN....3.5 hours!!! Cheercml....75 miles!!! FutureERN..2hour move away from family!!! You three really want(ed) to complete nursing school didn't you? This is not to say that everyone else didn't make sacrafices as well.

The 18 month accelerated programs are a dream for those with a BS/BA degree. The program I want to attend is a 3 year program however completing pre. req's prior to enrolling can take 2-3 semesters (.5 - 1 year) off.

I salute each one of you for your commitment, determination, dedication, and never ending desire to become wonderful nurses.

I am about to get into the BSN generic nursing program (hopefully....she told me to go ahead and move, so I'm assuming I will get in...haha), anyway I currently live about an hour and 45 min. away from the school. I am moving to a location that is about 30-45 min. away (depending on traffic). I couldn't move too far because I don't want to take my husband too far away from his job. I don't have to worry about snow because we live in South Texas. I think 45 min-1 hr. is worth it...not sure about 1.5 hr. Driving stresses me out...hah
