Our much loved medical director put his notice in today. Rumor has it he is going to a town about 45 minutes away to open a new inpatient facility. I asked him if I could come too and he laughed, said we would talk about it tomarrow. I am absolutely heartbroken. My boss is ineffective at best and incompetant to be kind. This doctor is all heart and kindness and a lot of the reason many of us stuck it out in the beginning. I would seriously be willing to drive to where he is going, but my husband isn't real keen on the idea. So my question is this, How far do you drive to work? How far is TOO far?
I have a 15 minute walk + 10 minute bus ride + 5 minute walk. $5.50/day bus fair, no parking, no gas, no car maintenance.
I like that I'm not responsible for driving safely before work when I'm not a person yet or when my brain is fried after a shift. Plus, in the winter there's no way my vehicle won't get through the snow!
i have to drive 20 miles to my contingent job which takes about 25 to 30 minutes. this job pays $40 dollars an hour but i"m still wondering if its worth driving 20 miles to work 24 hours per week. today i was really ****** off because i went to my work and i was told i'm not on the schedule to work and i had to drive 20 miles back to my home.do you think its worth it?
whenever i am not full time with a permanent schedule i always call ahead and check with staffing/supervisor for just this reason. it sucks to show up for nothing.
I only drive 5 minutes to work--which is the absolute closest I have ever lived to work. The longest trip I've ever made was 1.5 hours to my first nursing job. I finally quit driving the whole distance and drove 30 miles to commuter parking, and took the bus the rest of the way. For me, 30 minutes is the absolute longest drive I'd make. I'm too old, LOL, to be driving an hour to work, then working a 12 hour shift. The last time I did that, I was burned out in 6 months.
I drive 95mi to work. I am currently working on getting my husband to agree to move half way, so I can see him and my son every day. Since I am so far from home, I stay at a friends house up there. I started this job on 9/22. I leave on Sunday evening, and come home on thurs. or friday evening. October is going to be H#ll, only because with orientation, I will be working 4-5 days a week. but after that it will get better. My son asks every day when mommy will be home. It is rough, but I know I am doing the right thing to provide my son a better life.
Many of the nurses I work with drive from 35-60 minutes. It takes longer for me to drive through the parking lot to park than it does to get there. I live a block away.
I
Me too. It used to take me 9 minutes to get to my car and 6 minutes to get home. I have moved and it takes me 12 minutes to get to the hospital that I will be working at. (Same hospital but I quit to finish school). I am thinking about moving to an apartment that is right across the street from where I will be working so I can walk.

I live 29 miles away and it will take me 35 minutes in the early AM to get to work; but, an hour to hour and a half to get home during early rush hour. If the pay wasn't so much better than the night average around here (and it is dayshift), I would look closer to home. What makes it bearable is that I don't have to work weekends and Holidays any longer (unless I choose to do agency) & it is a 10 hour day. Don't think it would be bearable if I had to do 12's instead.
