How far is your commute and how offten do you work?

I have a custody issue that I'm dealing with so I'm unable to move our daughter out of the county. I know nursing jobs are hard to come by so i was thinking if I had to I would commute from Los angeles to san diego for work. I figure I only work 3 days a week so it can't be that bad....right?

For housing i would either rent a cheap hotel or look into area hostiles. It owuld only be short term...maybe a year until I can work out a better custody arrangment or get my one year of experiance and move closer to home.

Is it any better if you are working the 7p to 7a shift? Do they have fast past? What about taking the train in

I'm thinking 7p to 7a would be more difficult because you would be hitting traffic both ways. A 7a to 7p shift would work better because you could leave early enough to miss it in the morning, and late enough to miss some of it at night. But, if you're planning on staying down in San Diego, you would only need to make the drive twice a week, so it wouldn't be that bad.

I know there is a fast pass lane for a portion of the drive (not sure if it's the whole way though), but I never used it because I was only working in LA temporarily (about 6 weeks). I'm not sure about the train either. Sorry, I wish I had more info that would be helpful to you. I know it's tough right now, so if you have a great job opportunity in San Diego, it might be worth the hassle for a while... until more options come along. That's why I did it, and fortunately a job closer to home opened up so I didn't need to make that commute for as long as I thought I would.

When I lived at home with my family I commuted a whopping 7 miles each way 5 3-11 shifts a week...six months ago when I moved in with my boyfriend, I took on a commute to my previous facility that was probably about 40 miles each way (took me about an hour each way). Three months ago I started a new job at a teaching hospital 18 miles away which has cut my commute time in half (not to mention increased my rate of pay despite taking a 32 hour position instead of my previous 40). Soo much happier now!

I was driving 40 miles which took me 90 minutes give or take with traffic (occasionally 2 hours). I worked night shift and even commuting against rush hour I still always hit traffic. I left to work at a place 10 minutes away from home and deeply, deeply regret doing so. The only thing I like about the new job is the commute.

I work about 20 minutes from my home. I don't have to take any freeways. I cannot complain. Same goes for my school, about 20 minutes away. When I got my LPN I drove to the next city over and it took me about 30-45 minutes depending on traffic....still not bad.

I hate to drive period. I only have to drive 20 minutes to work now. Driving does not relax me. It stresses me out. I do admire those nurses though who can tolerate a long drive.

I don't know how people make that long drive daily, especially if you work an 8 or 12 hour shift and then don't even leave on time probably so then if you add an hour drive each way to that then you're gone all day and have no time for your home life. More power to those that do though. We do what we have to and some may have no choice.
