On the MA side of things we have had fewer patients in the last few months. Have seen some loose their insurence and stop being seen.

Minimal or no raises. Lost benefits. Higher patient ratios. Vacated positions left unfilled. Very poor morale. Dont complain says management "you're lucky to have a job"
BTW- this a Magnet facility

out of curiosity, why would you say that lpns are becoming obsolete?

My hospital is going for magnet status, they are not hiring any more LPNs. I think that magnet hospitals want all RN staff.
I notice that some of the LPNs are being used as techs.
Census is low, people are being canceled.

Actually, our nursing instructor told us(in 2001) that LPN/LVN's would probably be phased out. She highly doubted it, but I've kept that in the back of my mind all these years. That's why I'm taking my prereqs now so I can go back for my BSN. But I definitely thank God for my job now though!!!!

Agree with newish nurse. Higher-ups keep ramming it down our throats how "lucky" we are to even have a job. This is probably true. BUT, we are getting sick and tired of hearing it!! :angryfire
the hospital is and i guess they can be more picky now, so they'd rather hire rns. the lpns that leave, aren't being repalced. there's one particular lpn on my floor whose hours keep getting reduced......
I'm sick of it too. They are also VERY fortunate to have us as well.

My husband is an RN at a large teaching hospital. No raises for the 2010 fiscal year. They are stopping matching contributions to 403B. And eliminating the pension plan. Several units have closed in the last year and merged with others. Most of the staff from the closed units were able to be absorbed into other areas of the hospital. LPN's are obsolete and have all been eliminated. They had to take PCT jobs if they wanted to stay.
I just quit my nursing job (by choice, for several reasons) and have NO plans to pursue another nursing job. After 18 yrs, I have had it with the nursing profession. Time to move on. I am happy! At least I am one less working RN so that another can find a job in this economy! : )

We have 13,000 employees. NONE are LPNs.
