How Does This End?

It is difficult to imagine how this pandemic ends. Does it play out regardless of what we do? How do we make sense of a world that is so vastly different? As health care providers, knowledge is power, but it also gives us more anxiety and more awareness of the dangers around us. Nurses COVID Article

We Watched and Planned ...

My husband and I began watching the Covid-19 numbers in early January. I remember sitting in our living room during a typically dark, cold Minnesota Winter day and discussing how it was going to go down. We debated going to the "big city" the first weekend of February for fear that it had already made its way to the United States. My husband plotted graphs and looked at the exponential growth, and he made predictions about what might happen if it did get out of China. We bought extra food, essentials, and began to save money. We talked late into the night about the potential scenarios that might unfold.

And, Waited

I watched, in horror, as it began to make its way around the world, and everything that we talked about in late-night conversations started to materialize. My husband and I wished that we could be wrong. The lack of PPE and the rate of health care worker infection weighed heavily on our minds. We were already homeschooling and had begun stocking up, so when things shut down, we were already reasonably prepared. Few things changed in our daily routine, except the loss of a once a week preschool for our youngest, church for all of us, and an evening kids club and date night for the two of us. We are both in the high-risk category, so we hunkered down and waited ... and waited ... and waited ...

Now, the Uncertainty

I was fortunate (or unfortunate enough to be high risk) to be able to be off work for a while. I am headed back in a few weeks after spending an amazing, once-in-a-lifetime Summer with my husband and three young kids. I am anxious about how I will assimilate back into nursing. I am apprehensive about how I will feel coming home to my family after 12 hours of potential exposure. I am still fairly worried about the PPE situation. I have little trust in the government agencies who are guiding our direction in this pandemic.

At the end of the day, however, I am just weary. I am tired of seclusion, but also feel safer in it. I am tired of thinking about the future outcome for myself, my family, our finances, my world, OUR world. I am tired of the uncertainty. I am sad for my children and how this is all going to affect their future.

Questions Unanswered

How long do we do this?

How long do I go without seeing any extended family for fear of exposing them, or us?

How long do I hesitantly go out in public, debating whether I should wear a mask when no one else is?

How long do we keep our already homeschooled children away from social networks and peers?

How long do we stay home from church, our community lifeline?

How do we prepare financially, mentally, spiritually?

How do we, as a collective body of healthcare providers, ensure that the career we chose is honored and protected?

I did not sign up to go to war. I signed up to care for people, show compassion, educate, and advocate, but not at the cost of my own life. My family, indeed, never agreed to be exposed to the dangers that I may face when I go to work. How do I justify the costs for them?

These are all rhetorical questions and each of us has our own set of questions, all with no concrete answers. How does this end? I suspect it will play out regardless of what containment measures are put into place. It only takes one moment of weakness to be potentially exposed.

What are your questions? Your answers? How in the world does this end?

I think that the scientists and medical experts were not prepared for or expecting the level of incompetent corruption which would doom Trump's federal response. They've had to adjust their public approach as they confront the realities of that historic mismanagement and dishonesty of this administration, during a pandemic.

I don't know how anybody is surprised. We know Trump doesn't exist in the same universe as the rest of us when it comes to medicine. He believes that exercise uses up your heartbeats and kills you young.

My disappointment is that our doctors weren't reaching out to the public in January and drilling it in that if this virus comes to our country, this is the stuff we have to do to beat it.

We've known for 4 years that Trump is incompetent. We've also known that some of his followers are the stupidest, most easily manipulated people alive. We knew that as soon as there was any political involvement that it was going to instantly turn into a left vs right, doctors are being paid by big pharma conspiracy.

This needs to be a major lesson for us. We got lucky that as bad as this virus is, the serious complications and death are at a low enough rate that most of us and most people we know will get sick and then be back to normal. Imagine if this virus was killing 25-50% of the people it infected. Next time, as soon as an outbreak starts, our country needs to get on top of educating. This is also our sign that we need SERIOUS changes in education. People need to learn how to research. Basic viral infection control and transmission needs to be a part of health classes in high school. Painting a face on an egg and carrying it around isn't stopping teen pregnancy, so lets go with some knowledge that our country is seriously lacking. And our sites like facebook and Twitter really need to crack down on this. We've taken freedom of speech to the extreme that we believe that there shouldn't be consequences for what we do. To the point that when facebook blocks a post that's a blatant dangerous lie, the pretend freedom fighters come out to accuse them of fascism. facebook needs to commit, they start it, but then always cave when the same group of people start complaining. Social media needs to be forced to take responsibility for what knowingly allow to stay on their sites. All the anti-mask posts are literally killing people

.... sounds to me like you, @TheDudeWithTheBigDog, would believe in re-education camps. It’s a slippery slope from what you are professing to the treatment people receive in other countries when they don’t "think correctly". You are professing tyranny of the majority as an acceptable method of handling society. This is one of the very things the founders wanted to start their own country for. Freedom of thought with regard to religion was a major flashpoint during that period of history. Good luck being a Catholic or Anabaptist, etc. in England at that time. You were punished and shut out of society for not thinking right. How does that differ from what you are espousing?

I will continue to enjoy my freedom, thank you. I’ve lived overseas in a socialist country where you were expected to fall in line to whatever the glorious leaders determined was right. I didn’t care for it. Give people an inch, they will take it a mile.

Flagging and hampering misinformation on media platforms during a pandemic is the responsible thing to do.

You advocated stifling the voices of dissenters via facebook, etc. it’s a slippery slope. No drugs needed to see the connection between the lines of thought.

Dissenters vs spreaders of dangerous misinformation during a national emergency. Perspective.

Freedom of speech must remain an absolute. Educating our masses during K-12 to the point that they can differentiate misinformation from sound advice should be the solution; hence why the founders were great advocates of education for all. Sadly our education system is a shambles.

Nah. That business might get sued for spreading dangerous nonsense during a national crisis. The most responsible choice is to flag and deter the spread of dangerous misinformation on the platform.

just saying, stifling ideas whether good or bad doesn’t have a very good historical precedent.

This thread here is my exact point as to why America will never defeat COVID. It’s been made political. A deadly disease should have never been made to be political to begin with.

Yet with how volatile our country has been the past 4 years, it’s exactly what has happened. I’m so tired of seeing well Republicans this, Democrats this. We should have come together as people throughout this and fought and defeated it together.

I disagree completely with mask mandates by the government. The way to get people to wear masks should not be dictated from a government. It needed to be done differently. It should have been education, not a mandate.

The fact of the matter is, our top healthcare officials couldn’t get their crap together and agree or even learn about this virus when it was happening in China. Then it came here and they all changed their stance 50 times. It should have been one stance from the beginning. Now they’ve brewed distrust amongst the general public.

Now it’s political. Now we have mayors and governors with way too much power thinking they are Kings. It’s all out of control.

The CDC, the surgeon general, and Dr. Fauci have failed our country. Those are the people that needed to be in unison and leading our country through this pandemic from the beginning.

The absolute deep hatred between the two parties has caused people their lives in this country. It’s sad. Sitting here saying well, conservatives this, and liberals that will not save people from dying.

This thread is absolute perfect proof of what is absolutely wrong with our response to the pandemic.

This virus has been politicized from the very beginning when the president determined that he was not going to be honest with the country because he needed to market rather than manage. This isn't about republicans not masking. Or about party politics at all really. It's about a small but dangerous group of ideologues following Trump's chaotic and feckless recommendations. Some of these ideologues have positions of influence and authority. President Trump and his political appointees created the atmosphere of failure for the scientists. They created the confusing clearance of scientific information through a political office. Trump and Pence tried really hard to control the narrative about this virus and their narrative is very political. When mismanagement of the pandemic response resulted in catastrophic PPE shortages, the scientists had to scramble to preserve JIT flow to health professionals rather than to Walmart.

We were sort of past the honor system in masks when the president and his team modeled something very different for a very long time. As you can see, in the face of an economy that requires we get control of this pandemic, business will step in and mandate masks in the presence of weak political leadership.

It is sad.

As discussed in the other thread, business is not equivalent to government. Businesses are not required to allow any and all speech in their place of business. In fact, in this society business is occasionally held liable for what they promote or allow under their banner. That practice makes ţhem less tolerant of dangerous rhetoric.
