Houston GN Residencies

Published

I will be a new grad in May 2011 with my BSN and I have applied to a few residencies such as St. Luke's and Memorial Hermann, but I can't seem to find any of the other hospital's postings yet. Has anyone else been able to?

Just so you know Ben Taub only hires BSNs.... (Pretty much ANY big hospital in the med center will only BSNs due to everyone trying to obtain magnet status)

If you look at all the interns hired by Ben Taub they are all BSNs...

And every hospital is picky, it depends on who you know, if you worked there before, how good your grades were coming out of school (yeah GPA matters) or how well you presented yourself at an open house.

Also, yes not all hospitals reply quickly, but honestly that's just how it is. When you have 500 people applying for the same positions. You are basically applying against those same 500 people at another hospital. I know I went to interviews at several hospitals and saw the same people at each....

You can't really expect each recruiter to handle all the calls they get from all the applicants each day anxiously waiting for an answer and then reply to each and every email.....

Well, on the other end of things, it IS their job to return phone calls and emails ... and I DO expect a phone call in return when everytime I speak with you, you tell me to call back the next day for an answer and then you don't pick up. It's rude. I have also had hospitals who have been extremely helpful and prompt in returning calls, so it CAN be done if they want to be good at what they do, and reputable.

I understand that it's a timely process to go through 500 applicants, and to be honest, if they are only going to hire BSN's (which I do agree with), then they should save half of the poor students who are not BSN's the trouble of applying and make that a requirement. It will also greater the chances for those of us who are applying with their BSN.

Yeah I agree with MissPamela... they should stop wasting the ADN's time by putting "BSN preferred" and might as well put "BSN required" on their applications if that's what they are going to do. I couldn't imagine what some ADNs might be going through looking for a job!!! BSNs are barely getting hired these days! It's really sad.

FYI...Ben taub "says" they will only hire BSN's but if you have the grades and are bilingual you have a chance. How do I know this? Because a classmate of mine got a position for the January internship and he was ADN. Good luck to all of you, I'm thankful I have found a job, but its tough out there..keep trying!

^ yeah, but if you look at that intern class probably only 1-2 out of those 48 people had ADNs the rest were BSNs. It stinks because they used to give a pay raise when you spoke two languages but they took that away a year ago.

Just so you know I've applied to many places and have never gotten an email or call back. Just saw the position closed.... even when I tried an internal transfer...

I know it's frustrating but it happens to everyone. Something I did to get a job was to physically go to the hospital dressed up with my resume and introduced my self to the director/manager of the unit. You have to do the little things that set you apart otherwise you get lost in the fold as so many people look the same on paper...

Anyways good luck to you all! I know the frustration i've been there, something will open up just keep trying and give it time!

Yea, but at least they are still even considering ADNs... I even know one RN who got a job within the last couple years who didn't have the GPA requirement.

TheguyRN- where were you an internal applicant at, if you don't mind me asking? That's like the worst case scenario... investing so much time (and them investing so much money on you) to not even hire you at the end of the day!

Hey everyone,

Did anyone get an email this morning from Cynthia Trevino on a job fair this wednesday (but saying nothing about new grads?!) -- does this mean that if you get this that you're not getting an interview??

I got the same job fair email today. Not exactly sure what it means. All the positions on the email require experience.

I know!! I emailed her back and said that too ... ARG!

Yeah I didn't really understand it. I have 2 months experience working in critical care as a RN, but I was laid off at the end of my critical care internship when a hospital I was working for down here did a huge layoff. I've been told by most hospitals I don't have enough experience for a "regular" RN position, so they wanted me to apply to the GN internships again, which I've applied to every single one, but I'm not having much luck with that! So with 2 months experience I don't really think they're going to consider me either for their staff RN positions they say require 2 years exp. I'm thinking maybe it was just a mass email?? Who knows. Let me know if she responds back!

I will. Have you gotten any interviews yet?
