Houston GN Residencies

U.S.A. Texas

Published

I will be a new grad in May 2011 with my BSN and I have applied to a few residencies such as St. Luke's and Memorial Hermann, but I can't seem to find any of the other hospital's postings yet. Has anyone else been able to?

No interviews for any GN programs. I had one interview for a cath lab position a few days ago, so I'm really hoping I get that position. The Houston Chronicle had a big nursing career fair last Wednesday which I went to- didn't have all that much luck there. Texas childrens hospital told me they had over 900 applicants for their GN program. The recruiters there just said they had a ton of apps to review and I'd get a call if they were interested (christus st catherine, cypress fairbanks, hca west houston, park plaza...). I went to school out of state in Pennsylvania, and I have been told by many hospitals that they are unlikely to hire me just because I didn't do clinicals or an externship in their hospital (even though I've done an externship in critical care as well). It is extremely discouraging and frustrating! I was one of the fortunate ones to get a critical care internship last time around, but it doesn't seem to be helping me out too much now. Anything looking promising for you?

I have had an interview for the Methodist OR new grad position, and going down for my 2nd and 3rd interviews next Wednesday (I live in Mass)....and then I interviewed with St. Catherine's in Katy and it's legitimately my dream job so I'm waiting to hear from them ... and then I met with Maxim staffing and they are willing to take me on as a traveling nurse once I move and get established, either full time or for some extra money.

That's about as far as I've gotten as of now.. I'm hoping to hear from Cypress-Fairbanks and Ben Taub as well. Let me know if you end up getting the cath lab job!

Well, I just recieved the "sorry we chose another applicant" email from Houston Northwest. At least I got an email, which I appreciate.

Hey, I haven't gotten that so count yourself lucky lol ... I had called last week and they had told me they had chosen everyone. I never got an email though.

Hi MissPamela19, did you ever meet with Maxim? What was the deal there? What hospital were they willing to work you and for how long? Any training offered? Any information will be most helpful and appreciated.

Thanks.

Anyone hear back from MD Anderson about the GN program? They said by the 18th they would call to let people know. I havn't heard anything so I'm assuming they have made their decision. Kind of disappointed since I worked there as a PSNE during the summer. I would love to work there, but I guess it wasn't meant to be!

mtz86,

Myself and a friend who interviewed at MD Anderson haven't heard back yet either. Maybe they are taking a little longer than expected? Frustrating!!

Hi everyone! Just wanted to let y'all know that I got a call for an interview at Christus St. Catherine's! I thought they had already called everyone and were not going to call anymore, but they just called me this morning and i'm ecstatic! So for everyone else that applied, I'm sure they will be calling more people this week! :)

Anita congrats!! St. Catherines is my TOP choice. I loved everything about the hospital when I interviewed. What department are you interviewing for and when is it??

Thank you MissPamela! I put my top choice as Telemetry and my 2nd as ICU, and Tia called and said I would be interviewed for Telemetry, though ICU is also a possibility. But I'm mainly interested in Telemetry so I told her that. I have the interview at 930am on Thursday. I'm glad you like Christus St. Catherine also! I've heard great things about the hospital :)

Hi Guyz! Just want to ask if Christus St. Catherine is still accepting applicants for GN program?

Anita, let me know who you interview with (I think it'll be the same people I did - they seem to be in charge of ICU, CCU and tele). They asked a bunch of questions so think about things before you go! =)

Spiderman, applications are closed for St. Catherines. Decisions and presently being made and they told me I could have an answer next week or soon thereafter.

Peacenjoy, Maxim was kind've .... interesting. No interview, just meeting with them to fill out an application, take copies of a bunch of things, and talk about my options. You'd basically be going to a different hospital, NH, rehab, jail, etc. everyday... which stinks. But it's good money (don't have an exact hourly rate, though). You also have to do a ton of tests online as like the last thing. He said since I am a new grad I would be limited to the places and types of jobs, of course, but that he could still get me work. It sounded like there was no training. I wouldn't do it as a full time job, especially as a GN (although for anyone over 36 hours a week for 4/5 weeks in the month you get benefits), but I figure once I am settled and have a few months experience under my belt I could really start to pick up shifts there for extra money.
