I'm thinking about going the RN-ADN and then BSN root. I was wondering if anyone here has experience with Houston Community College's ADN program. Is it very competitive? What kind of criterion do they use for accepting students? What's the program like once you enter it? etc.
Thanks
Actually, I believe that may be a falsehood. Some of the TMC hospitals will only hire BSN students due to their Magnet status; however, I have friends in HR at various hospitals and have interviewed nurse recruiters from other hospitals and they could care less where you went to school. If you have your license - welcome aboard!
I second that!! An RN is an RN, not an RN UT or RN HCC. We all have to take and pass the same national boards. As for HCC, I have nothing but great things to say about their program. Is it perfect, well, whose is, but as long as we get to our common goal of becoming nurses, who cares. Every program has a minimum set of standards that we all have to meet. If anyone wants any further info PM me and I'll be glad to answer. Good luck all, cya on the other side soon!:chuckle

Thaitiger, I am glad you are enjoying the program. Have you taken Pedi yet? or Oby
I have a few questions, would appreciate a response.
1) Does HCC admit students starting in the Spring semester ? When should one start the admissions process for Spring 2007 admission.
2) Which hospitals do HCC ADN students go for their clinical.
3) Is parking available for admitted students ? Is there any free or reasonably affordable parking in the med center ? what do most students do as far as parking options ?
4) Any advisor you would recommend. Someone who is helpful and know their stuff.
Thanks

1) Yes, HCC takes both spring and fall applicants. However a much smaller number in the spring. If I were you, I'd get started in the application process now. Pharmacology is a pre-req to get into the program and there is typically a one or two semester wait to start Pharm, so my suggestion would be get up to the campus and apply asap so they can put you on the waiting list for Pharm.
2) HCC goes to a number of Hospitals in the medical center and throughout Houston. It varies each semester.
3) Unfortunately there is no really way going about parking as far as I know. I have a parking contract which runs me about $60/month and I know thats what a large majority of students do. I've heard some taking the bus in and I'm sure that would save a significant amount of money if you wanted to look into that route. Honestly, the cheapest way to go about parking is probably getting a contract because most places will run you no less than $6-$10/day, so the $60/month is WAY cheaper.
4) As far as advisors go, there really isn't anyone I, personally would recommend. I've never had any great help with them and have relied mainly on senior students to get the most accurate information. The secretaries, counselor, etc will all tell you different things. Getting a straight answer can be extremely difficult and frustrating so your best bet is to talk to someone in the program and they can probably tell you everything you need to know, since they have gone through the process and are in the prgram. If You have any more questions, feel free to ask!

Hey Brooke, I see you pulled your nose out of your books to post! How's school?
Kris! It's going GREAT!!!! I am having so much fun!!!!! We start clinicals next Tuesday and I am so excited!!!! A little nervous but I feel like I'm ready now! We had the hospital orientation yesterday which was cool. We're at spring branch hospital this semester, so got to meet some of the nurses and check out the unit we'll be on! How's school going for you? CALL ME! I've called like a million times and you never answer!!
I know you posted this a long time ago, but just wanted to clarify something about UT-H. I interviewed with the coordinator of the Accelerated BSN program, and she informed me that the Pharmacology class i'm taking at HCC will transfer to UT-H. Good day.
Hey Brooke,
Sounds like you're handling the program splendidly!! :) Just like I knew you would. It seems overwhelming in the beginning, but if you put in the effort, you get great returns. Good luck on those care plans, they're a hoot! Let me know how things are going, and if you need any info of course! Good Luck!

I absolutely am! Truly, I am having so much fun so far! It has been overwhelming and is getting even more so with clinicals coming up and the dreaded care plans!!! We went through all the details of them yesterday and oh my gosh!!! SCARY! I'm thrilled about finally getting started in the hospital next week! I can't wait to get my first patient!! How is Pedi/OB going for you????
It's going great, I don't want to steer away your focus from Fundamental, but trust me, when you make it to this course, it's a whole new ballgame. I don't mean that in a bad way, and you've probably already heard all the horror stories, but pay them no mind it's as difficult as you make it. I think the eight week format is what's giving people a hard time...so much info to take in , but I'll give you more details on that when you get there. Glad to hear things are going well, your instructors are very good. The ones I have here in OB are excellent, very thorough and nice! Clinicals are great, eveyone is fighting to stay in the nursery with all the newborns. Keep up the studies and let me know if you have any questions!

Yes, HCC requires a minimum score in order to apply. I can't remember what the minimum is, but I can tell you, that its not too bad. As a matter of fact, HCC is pretty leniant regarding their ACT/SAT scores and the age of the scores. I graduated high school in 1984 and they STILL took my (very) old ACT scores! :roll Other school wanted me to retake them.
