I did run a search here, and somethings came up on a particularly bad teacher that folks were having serious trouble with, but that is old information. I wonder if anything has changed in regard to this?

im planning on applying to north harris community collge but it is SOOO competitve. how hard was it to get into hcc? how many students do they allow each year? any info would be great. do you know about how many applicants they have each semester per how many students they allow. Im starting to get so frustrated with all this Im beging to think im going to have to go the lvn route first then the transition... but I really dont want to im done with all my pre reqs. and just want to start the adn program:eek:

The wait was not long at all for me, once I finished my prereqs I got in the following semester, keep in mind though, the better your grades of course, the better your chances. If you plan to attend HCC, make sure you have all, and I mean all the prereqs as well as any non-nursing, suggested courses they require you to take. For instance, Psychology (Lifespan and Development), is not exactly a prereq, but is a course you have to take during the program, if you've already taken this course before you apply, your chances of getting in are greatly improved. As far as all the negatives posted in the forums, just as in any program, nothing is perfect, but I have had no problems with instructors in the classroom or clinic. I am enrolled in the evening program (only accepts fall admission), due to the fact that I have to work a full time job as well. Our admitting class was about 120 students for the evening and about the same amount for the daytime. At the end of the semester, only about half have survived. So far my nursing GPA is a 3.86, so it can be done as long as you persevere and work hard. Let me know if you have any other questions, I will be happy to answer them to the best of my ability. I've read all the website requirements and all that, but can't seem to get a hold of anybody from the nursing dept to answer other questions! I have taken alot of core. This will help me? I am taking a & p and pharm this semester to finish pre-reqs to apply for fall. They say on the website that these classes must be taken by June 1st for fall admission. But since application is due in April will this hurt me? Also after you applied how long did it take to receive a the letter of acceptance/denial? I also noticed on the application it doesn't ask for much at all. Is it based on GPA and SAT/ACT scores? My GPA is 3.5 and my ACT was 32 comp. (It says 18 comp for admin. req.) Also is there a waiting list you are supposed to get on to get in line or something? Sorry for all the questions! Like I said I can't get a hold of anybody! I am going to the orientation in a few weeks. Thanks in advance for your help!

I am taking pharmacology this semester. I know you have to have it as a pre-req, but in the catalog it just says "with grade of C or better." I haven't had much sucess getting my questions answered from the school and I haven't been to the info session yet so I really don't know, which is why I'm here trying to get info.

To answer the Pharmacology question, yes it a prereq, and yes you do need to pass a math test with a 90 or better, but don't fret, the math is basic drug dosage calculations, all taught in the course...practice plenty. Here's the breakdown of courses needed: Anatomy & Physiology I and II, English Comp I, Psychology-Introduction as well as Lifespan/Development, Microbiology, Pharmacology, and General Biology is recommended, but may not be needed. The way they determine whether you get in or not is by a point system based on the grades you have in these prereqs, and the better your grades, the higher your chances of getting in. Letters are sent out a various times throughout the weeks prior to registrations. One thing HCC is notorious for is waiting until the absolute last minute to do anything, so my advice is to be persistent, meaning if you have taken your prereqs and are waiting for that letter, call them everyday to make sure you are, or are not getting one. As far as the waiting list, as I mentioned before, there really hasn't been one lately, many people who did have C's in their prereqs did get left out having to wait until next year because admission to the evening program is once a year. Going to the orientation is the first major step, it's held every 2nd & 4th Tuesday @ noon and 3rd Thursday @ 5pm of every month. Hope this helps, let me know if you have any additional questions. I had attended an HCC orientation a few months back and it was horrible. There were tons of people there in a huge room (id guess at least 100 plus) but there was no real info given out. After having been to North Harris, Tomball and Kingwood College's orientation HCC was a BIG disappointment. They did not give out any info on the selection criteria etc. All they kept on doing is saying how tough it is and how demanding it is etc. Plus ended up paying $ 10 or so for parking across the street.

I found the orientation very unprofessional. I know nursing is hard and we need a clean criminal record, what I need to know is what I need to get in and most importantly what is the selection criteria and what last semester/yr's admission cutoff was - that info was not provided. Im not saying its not a good program because I didnt have much to go by, all I felt was the orientation left much to be desired compared to other orientations.

I second your opinion texascanadian. I went to their orientation in 2004 and it sounds similiar to your experience. It turned me off completely. IMO, an unorganized, unprofessional orientation = an unorganized, unprofessional program. School is too stressful to be worrying about a poorly planned program. However, maybe some people that have gone there have had a different experience. Again, this was my perception. :) Ketcia:)
