I read recently in an article in Nurse Magazine, about the so called horizontal abuse, the ridicule and hostility between fellow nurses. My question is this, and I know I will be flamed for sounding like a male chauvenist, but does this happen as much with male nurses toward another male nurse as it does between two female nurses?I think the problem stems from the very nature of the profesion,it is female dominated and men have a different way of dealing with problems.Say my fellow RN"Joe"rebuked me about a mistake I made,ok,noted and I carry on,but we would probably go grab a bite or have a cup of coffee later as if nothing happened, unless Joe was a compleat jerk, the matter would be forgoten on a personal level. But a woman sees this as a confrontation, and even though she is polite and agreeable about it,in her mind and behind that persons back, she is showing resentment.Fact is,most women can be catty, men tend to blow it off.I have the utmost respect for female nurses and women in general, but there is a reason why we are male and female, and its not just body parts. What say you? James
No big secret, men and women deal with lots of work situations in a different manner. The mind of a female and the mind of a male just do not work the same way.
I have seen women plot against one another at the work place until I just wanted to grab them both by the hair and give them a shake. Men do not do this. They just let the little stuff role off their backs and keep working.
That said, when men do get upset at work, and the ones I have worked with took a lot of crap before they lost their tempers, they really cut loose. I saw one guy almost jerk the door off of the HN office one day. He was in no mood for any further crap. He told her and a few others to give him a lot of room, no talking, no interactions with him until he gave them permission. I just watched and listened, he was right. I liked him and was sorry to see him go to another unit.
In the end, nursing is stressful, men deal with it differently than women.
There are so many cats, but very few dudes going postalNo big secret, men and women deal with lots of work situations in a different manner. I know I am gonna get in big trouble for this but here it goes. Are some of you saying women work as well together as men? "Redicalllas" as my little boy says. One of the big blowouts in my old unit was because one of the new young good looking nurse grads wore pants you could supposedly see her panties through. I do notice stuff like that and I could not see her panties. But one of the more veteran nurses went to the unit manager about it. The unit manager got in on the act and verbally consuled her on uniform. she of course got a bad attitude and the situation esculated until the new nurse left the unit. She is now a very good nurse somewhere else, I never heard a legitimate complaint about her, and she did feed into it and bicker with them too. I have worked with guys for years and never even think about their underware, yet you female nurses run off a new nurse because of it. Stuff like this happens on a daily basis, but I am already in trouble so I should probably shut up now. Just my $.02.

Your right they will crucify ya over this.
But I never feel discriminated about being a male nurse or for being one.
You probably right,I am just going from my own personal working experience with male and female co-workers,it just seemed that men tend to let it go sooner than women. And again I say,I have the utmost respect for wome as people and co-workers.James
My husband laughs at me because I feel this way.

I agree with you, sometimes its like junior high all over again. Men tend to just say thier peace, get mad and then blow it off. With us girls I swaer it can go on forever, and if your not a perfect nurse your gonna get talked about too. Women are nuts. Haha oops (just looked into mirror). I resemble that comment! i dO WISH THIER WAS MORE SUPPORT OVERALL!

I suppose that you haven't read many of my posts on this BB (as far as the open mind).
And speaking of horizontal violence in people making baseless assumptions about others and talking about them, I suppose that we now have an example.
