The Newspaper I write for is having a bit of a problem with an image they are using just as an Icon on what is called the "Nurse Talk" section. I will post a link check the picture of Betty Boop there and please give your opinions/feeling on the subject of this Icon being degrading to nurses, and if you feel it is inappropriate to use?
This was the only picture I could find online the caption Bottoms up does not appear on the newspaper and it is not a coffee cup.

Of course it's inappropiate. Use some common sense.
Ok this answer seems very intense but also very lacking in content. I would like for you to expand on why it offends you. My common sense is not lacking I just don't feel that it should be a threat to anyone that performs their job in a professional manner. I feel that an innocous picture of an old time figure that is after all a cartoon and meant to be taken lightly is simply fun. I don't honestly beleive that people that are not in the medical profession would take one look at this picture and immediately think that all nurses are promiscuous little hussies!
how about a picture of florence nightingale?? i attached two from my computer. i personally don't have a problem with the betty boop picture overall. it is kind of cute. however, if it is in a newspaper representing serious nursing issues- i'd say it's not appropriate either. just my opinion.
I think I would have to agree with everyone else. I would fine some other ICON. Jenneiferhelen has posted a website with medical ICON and I think the one of the NURSE CHARTING would be a good one for the column. Take a look at them I'm sure you will find something else that is a more appropriate and represents Nursees in a respectable way.

Think about other professions. How do you think physicians, attorneys, engineers, etc. would feel about having a cute little Betty Boop image representing them? So why would it be appropriate for nursing?
Ok and I would say to this that most people(not necessarily groups)have some sense of humor and do not take everything so seriously. Let's say Bugs Bunny in a white coat with a headlight, to represent physicians, I doubt they would be offended because they are secure in their position. I really think everyone would take it in the spirit that it is meant, light hearted, goodnatured, fun! But Since Betty Boop has a short skirt and some sexual connotation some people jump right to innapproriate. I am not attempting to discourage anyone from voicing their opinion. I am just stating my thoughts on the matter and welcome more debate on the issue.
I believe that the editor is going to go with an Angel in place of Betty Boop, I will not be offended but I really DO NOTthink it is any more realistic a representation. I see us as good people doing a difficult job but not Saints. In that I do know more nurses that go out and party and are to some extent promiscuous than I know that go to church on a regular basis.
Just for the record I am not overly religious myself but do Believe in God and do pray over every Pt that dies in my proximity. Meaning that if I am near when they pass I will stop and say a short prayer for them and their families and God's will.
ccu nrs - please don't take this as antagonistic :uhoh21: - it is really meant only as a question. as i see you are a male, how come betty boop, who (in my mind at least) represents cutsie, ditsy (sp?), and dumb. not that i have anything against the icon on a tee shirt, mug etc. but on a newspaper column representing nursing?
[color=#483d8b]why not, as lpn2be2004 suggested, have a "male stud wearing a nursing cap and speedo style underwear with a red cross, and with nothing else" if it is only meant as a humorous symbol? personally, i am more than a little tired of nurses being represented in humorous ways. not that i don't have a good sense of humor - i do - but maybe this is why we are not looked at as being professionals. we don't look at ourselves that way. and the docs i know would not appreciate being symbolized by bugs bunny either. all right, i know a couple who would think it cute, but not the majority by any means.
[color=#483d8b]again, i do not mean this in any nasty way. just my humble little opinion. i agree that an angel is not terribly appropriate either, but do you have any input into choice of icon? there are many other more appropriate icons, no??? :)
a cartoon wearing a nursing cap....i don't mind.
a half naked cartoon suggesting to people that their butts should go in the air...i do.
if betty boop's boobs weren't hanging out and her skirt wasn't up to her buttcrack..i might not have a problem with it.
you asked "why?" well, quite frankly i'm a conservative person and don't feel that i should have to be forced to look at anything that is meant to be sexual out in public. especially if it brings my future profession into it.
to be quite honest, i'm tired of seeing people's midriffs and thongs hanging out of the back of their pants, too....but that's another topic.
maybe betty boop could put on a nice sweater and an a-line? lol
for the record, i'm 23 years old. i am positive that even more conservative older folks would be more offended by it.

i personally would not have a problem with the male in a speedo as long as he is very heavy and harry, lol
no i really do not have any say in the matter of choice i was just wanting to get a wider selection of opinions from this arena, i thought that perhaps it was just my loacation, oklahoma in the center of the bible belt and sort of out of touch, but apparently it is bigger tyhan that. if i were the editor i would probably just use the pictures of the nurses actually answering the questions and perhaps a coffee mug for a center piece with nursing is a work of heart on the mug.

Well, I don't think Jennifer provided the link as an example of something that doesn't have the Betty Boop picture... the link just provides more options. Some of the gifs on that site I'd also prefer not be used (like the "VaVoom nurse" gif, I think it was, with the enormous knockers!), but I think overall it provides a good variety of options with everything from nurses charting to running to holding syringes... that appear more professional.
Heck, if one were to select an icon from that link in particular, I'd almost go with the heart wearing the "nurse's hat". It's gender neutral after all.
