Home Instead Senior Care?

So after 6 years in accounting I KNOW I want to become a nurse. I recently applied for Galen College and I am awaiting my test results. I would love to be able to work as a CNA or something like that after I get some clinicals under my belt, but financially that is not an option for me. I recently applied for a CAREgiver position with Home Instead Senior Care. It attracted me because they are willing to train and the hours are really flexible so I could just do a few hours on the weekend. Does anyone have any experience with this, and do you think it would be a good idea to get this experience??? Thanks!!

Sorry to chime in a little late on your post. I work for Home Instead Senior Care in the Cincinnati, Ohio area. So far I like it. There's no gaurantee for hours, though, and I was told at my office that they already had an abundance of weekend CAREGivers. I was unable to get a position working just weekends. I'm getting ready to start LPN school in December, so I am going to work for Home Instead in the mornings and then take classes at night. They are pretty flexible, but it really depends on client needs.

Oh I also forgot to mention that you don't really get a lot of "medical" experience working for them. It's mostly light housekeeping, meal preparation, companionship, etc. I am a State Tested Nurse Aide and really don't utilize most of the skills I learned. For example, we are not allowed to take Vital Signs as a CAREGiver, even though I learned how to do it in Nurse Aide class. However, it is a rewarding job and a great way to start getting comfortable working with clients, especially seniors. I'm not sure how much preparation it will give you for Nursing school, but at least you will have some experience to put on your resume. If you need anything else, just ask!
