Seems the aides on one of secure dementia units thoughts it was a good idea to keep reminding the residents that it was Christmas Day...A few reacted with gleeful childlike wonder.....Several just cried.Wish I had been there. It would not have happened
Ugh.. Some forget or simply don't understand what that condition does to a person. I HATE it when people constantly remind the patients with Az what the current reality is, when they known darn well how much it upsets them. For god sakes - if living in 1950 gives them peace - let them have it.
I know they mean well but they just don't get it.One calls them "her rezzies" and makes little fascinators and bows and such for the ladies.Last Halloween she brought in face paint and was going to make them all up.Not my mother, thank you....
Right. If the resident enjoys the holidays /it brings them joy - go for it, but otherwise leave them the heck alone. Most residents don't seem to be real thrilled about most Halloween celebrations - there is somthing about already having one foot in the grave plyus they come from a different generation with different celebrations. I have had a few that could take the humor of the holiday and went with it, they were typically our younger residents.

All the jingle bells were more than one resident could handl. Overwhelmed he left the dining room and retreated to his room.
How easy it is to forget how something as simple as choir singing and making merry can upset someone's sense of inner peace..
