My friend has a mild case of psoriasis. But, he doesn't want to go to a doctor. I was just wondering if anyone knew any good home remedies. The situation is really bringing down his self esteem...
THANKS FOR THE HELP

Hi there,
This is going to sound strange.... as a former hairdresser (of 25 years), I had a few customers come in for perms just to heal (if only temperarily) their psoriasis. One told me "it burns sooooooooo good" (kind of like a hot shower on an itchy rash). The solution is made of ammonium thioglycolate, and it was this, not the neutralizer that did the trick for them. I'm only in the pre-nursing stage now, so my advice isn't knowedgable, beyond heresay. Whatever he tries, I hope it works for him. ~ Diane

I heard about some type of "tar" treatment, and I thought it could be found in the health stores like gnc. This was about 15 yrs ago and I don't remember much but I remember it had something to do with "tar"

How does he know that he actually has psoriasis if he doesn't see a doctor?
And if his skin is falling off, then if is much more than a mild case. He needs a definitive diagnosis first, or he can just make things worse.

I agree----what if it's an infection or some completely different disorder? I vote w/seeing dr too.

Sorry to read about your friend. However, you should understand that as a nursing BB, members can neither diagnose any condition nor offer treatment advice, especially not over the Internet. Your friend needs to see a doctor or a nurse practitioner who can diagnose his skin problem and prescribe appropriate treatment and/or medications.
Please let us know how it goes.

The skin disorder p vulgaris comes to mind. Rare, difficult to treat but treatable.

Apparently, psoriasis runs in his family, his dad and brothers have it too. So, I guess he's assuming it's they same thing. His brothers have been to the doctor and that is what they were diagnosed with and he says his skin problems look exactly the same. He doesn't like taking medication so he just wanted to know if any home treatments existed. So.... that's why he won't go to the doctor, he doesn't want a prescription.

i have had psoriasis since i was a kid and what usually helps me is just putting hydrocortizone on the psoriasis about twice a day (once in the morning and once and night). i've been to a dermatologist but since i don't have a rx plan this is what my dr tells me too do. but i do have a very mild form of psoriasis mainly on my knees and sometimes elbows. also, theres a shampoo called tar gel that he may want to try. its a little expensive, but he can buy the generic brand and it works just as well (walgreens has there own brand). my dermatologist recommended it too me. it helps if he has any psoriasis on his scalp.
