Hiring manager offered position, HR said no and won't tell me why.

Im so confused and upset.

I've been a public health nurse for a year and 6 mos of cardiac pcu prior to that.

2 weeks ago I interviewed for a cardiac tele floor at ********, and it went wonderfully. The hiring manager gave me a tour of the entire unit and introduced me to almost every nurse. At the end of the tour/interview, she shook my hand and even gave me a hug and said, "Welcome to the team!"

She told me to wait and hear from the HR department. After almost 2 weeks of not hearing anything I gave the recruiter a call and she very rudely said that they would not be hiring me and that they hired another candidate instead. I explained how the manager that I interviewed with had offered me the position and that I was very confused and wondered if she could share what went wrong or why I was being denied the position (there were day and night positions available, btw). She said she couldn't say anything. Nothing about my references or what went wrong. Just that they weren't going to offer me the position, but could not tell me a single reason why. I called the hiring manager afterwards, since she had given me her cell phone number, and she could tell I was upset and said that she would call the recruiter herself because she really wanted to hire me but HR told her that she couldn't. She called me back about 5 mins later and told me that the recruiter said she couldn't tell her or myself why. I didn't authorize a background check or anything (not that anything is on it anyways). All of my references checked out because I called each and every one of them and all gave glowing references.

I'm so confused and upset. Has anyone else had an experience like this or have any feedback?

Happy nurses week to me. :(

Thank you for any input.

Nothing to do with you or your credentials. They would have gave you the 'someone was a better fit' line. Sounds like the budget for that nursing position was diverted to another department or another purpose by higher management. It stinks to be treated this way but it's a warning how they value their employees.

That could very well be true! Yes, a red flag for sure :( Hopefully the next interview (and hopefully offer) goes more smoothly! I'm a bit nervous now though lol.

I agree with this as a possibility. Someone used me as a reference without checking first so when I got a call about them, I was honest. Nothing slanderous, but definitely truthful. Had they asked me I would have asked them to use a different source.

Thing is I have close personal relationships with everyone I used and none were called, like I've said.

Sometimes I think human resources has way too much power. I've heard stories like this before and it is usually due to political and personal feelings on their part. If someone does not like how you look, they will not hit you. Also, references can be tricky over the phone and words taken out of context. Unfortunate.

1) If you have worked for this hospital, or any of its entities prior too you could be on a no re-hire list. IF you did previously work at this hospital or for this system I would work on getting copies of your previous employee record.

2) As someone else said one of your references isn't being entirely honest with you and made negative comments. I wouldn't accuse any of them of doing so of course, but try and figure out which one.

I would stop contacting HR and that NM because it will come off as you having sort of a temper tantrum because you didn't get the job if you continue calling them and bothering them. Just let it go.

First, I have never worked at that hospital or any of it's sister hospitals. I have never done clinicals there and have no prior affiliation.

Second, I only contacted HR once 2 weeks after my interview after having thought I had the job per the hiring manager. I'm the one that had to reach out to HR, otherwise I wouldn't have heard yes or no either way. Who said I kept calling and "bothering them"?

It's been let go and I've moved on. I was just completely confused and asked for advice.

OP, sorry you keep having to address the same erroneous assumptions over and over. It must be frustrating.

This happened to me but I was told they were hiring so many new grads they didn't want to add my 4 years home health experience to the mix. I found out later the ratio there was 8 to 1 whereas I am now at 5 to 1 with better pay. So there's that!

BTW I found it easier to get a job in a critical access hospital in a small town. Then you can move on after a year or make a career in a varied environment.

Haha, glad I wasn't the only one seeing that. Thanks Klone! :)

I actually totally think this is what happened. May is not a good time to apply and interview! A recruiter from another hospital (same company) had called me in regards to another pcu position at another hospital and I told him I was offered a position by another hiring manager but hadn't heard from HR in a week and a half, he told me that she was just wrapping up a large new grad hire. Make no sense to me why they would give to a new grad over someone who has at least some experience. It could have been something else but I kind of think this is what happened. Would have just been nice to know definitively.

I agree with you, but the OP did ask for feedback/input. Most of theories put forward here about what happen don't point to the OP doing anything wrong. That might not make him/her feel any better about it, but, the point is, it likely is not the OP's fault.

This may sound mean, but I don't intend it to be mean...if you don't want these theories about what might have happened, then a public internet chat form is probably not the best place to come looking for input.
