Hiring Freeze and New Grad

Are there hiring freezes all over the country? Am I the only one who thought nursing was one of those magic careers that the economy couldn't hurt? :crying2: I think I need a hug!

When I started nursing school, there were so many positions open for RNs. I used to read the paper and dream of the hospital I wanted, on the floor I wanted, great benefits, etc. Now, I just pray that I can get a hospital job so I don't have to stay in LTC. Thank goodness I enjoy my job and my residents and I can stay working as a nurse there as as long as I want.

Hummm...i thought i was the only one who is going through this ORDEAL!! I am one of those who thought "nursing is a recession proof profession" where i would not have any problem of finding a Job. I graduated in May 08', wanted to get over with my NCLEX before starting to work!! After doing so starting in January, i have been applying, applying and applying, but i am not getting any calls, and when i do call , they say they are still in the decison process. It has been 2 months now.....am still looking....its really tiresome. What scares me is on top of the december graduates, there are the soon to be graduating May graduates, where the applcation pool is gonna be swamped. I live in Richmond, VA. I am mostly filling out the "new grad application" postions, thinking that it includes almost all the units available to new grads. Am i doing somethin wrong here? Should i also feel out the speciality units where its say 1-2 years experience prefered. Do you guys have any tips to do to make my application stand out?....Best of luck to all of you out there......we will pass through this:redbeathe!!

I also cannot find a job anywhere in RI. I graduated in December 2008, and it's very discouraging out there. I can't even get a crappy nursing job that I don't really want because I don't have any experience:(

Move to DC, Philly or NYC then...tons of jobs!!!!!!!!!

I feel your pain, no jobs here either. I found out yesterday that I haven't even been considered for one of the ICU programs I applied for in a hospital I have worked in for 3 years. I was offered med-surg, dialysis, orthopedics. I am not interested in any of those, but I guess I have to take what I can get. I am very sad about this too. :scrying:

"Ton of jobs" ??? Not according to my personal experience and my classmates. There are not enough new grad positions in the Philly area (saturated with new grads).

Penn, Temple, several agencies in the PHL area have openings posted on their sites

stykerfoce,

I just want to point out the emphasis is on "new graduate positions", not any position. :)

I can attest to there being no jobs for new grads in Philly. After applying for every job within an hour commute I came up empty. Every single recruiter I got on the phone said, "We're not hiring new grads right now. Maybe in a couple of months." There are TONS of jobs posted, but believe me, they are not hiring. I moved back in with my parents and am working in a crappy small town where there is an actual "nursing shortage." It's pretty terrible.

I have looked in many cities where I could crash at family and friends for a year or so. All have frozen.. The postings are there, the jobs are there, the money is not, ergo, no job.

As someone mentioned a few posts back: just because there are jobs listed does not mean the positions are available.
