  1. CCNur06 Thanks a lot for your advice. It funny that you told what i just did and very thankful for. I knew a nurse who i called and mentioned to her about my situation, she contacted her manager and the recruiter called me the next day and i interviewed a few days later for a position which was not advertised. To my surprise i really liked the unit, the manager, and their benefit is amazing. And its with HCA (CJW medical center), i got the offer a few days later as u mentioned they are the better ones in this market. So i am really excited to start my nursing career soon in a hospital that i feel comfortable in (so far :) My orientaton begins April 20th. Best of luck to all of you out there who is still looking!!
  2. Suzanne, correct me if i am wrong, but i read under kaplan's website that cgfns exam is not required for Maryland, but the booklet was written back in 2007. So things could have changed, so what's the deal? I have a friend who is a foreign trained nurse who is trying to find a job here in the states, she was mostly looking for states that does not require cgfns. From what i understood, for those states, all she needs to do is meet the qualifications of the BON she is applying to right? She understands the job market right now, but wanted to at least start the application process and get the NCLEX out of the way. But how could she take the NCLEX without coming here first, and if she needs to come here to sit for the exam, how can she obtain a visa? Thanks in advacne.
  3. This sounds like a lot like my story RNMariposa, but 6 months is not unrealistically a long time, things happen for God's sake!!!The reason i give them when they ask what i have been doing ever since graduation (which didn't felt that long to me), is that i was preparing for my NCLEX and i was searching for the right hospital to start my career at. I had this promising interview, yesterday, i loved everything, benefit is wonderful, so i am keeping my fingers crossed to hear their final decision. So something will happen soon,,,,stay strong my friend:)
  4. Best of luck to you and all the new grads out there struggling with the this "hiring freeze".....i so feel your pain. Applied 200 jobs-that's impressive!!! I am in the same boat as you, not planning to relocate....in the meantime lets do our best and hope for the best:saint:
  5. Not A HAT person- Good luck with your job. 250 miles away wow....that means you relocated, right? What unit are you starting out btw?
  6. Thank you all for your input!! almostanurse25, i graduated in May 08', took my NCLEX in January. rebzemek:- my husband likes his job here in Richmond, VA, so relocation will not be an option for me at the moment. Thanks a lot for your advice though. The good news is i just got a call from this hospital like 10 minutes away from where i live, which would be ideal. I am having my interview for their surgical unit this Friday!! Wish me luck....:)
  7. Hi, Is there any of you out there who is affected by the current hiring freeze out there? What are you doing to make your resume and your self stand out. Unfortunately i have not had any hospital work experience as a tech or such during school, and i kinda waited too long to start applying (never knew this would be coming). I waited till i took my NCLEX. I read about taking certification classes, could any one enlighten me how i could go about that. What kind of certifications do i need to do as a new grad. I was planning to start out in Telemetry but right now i am willing to start out anywhere, as long as its somewhere i could put some experience under my belt. Any one who has an advice for me, please feel free to drop a line. Thanks a lot. And Good luck to my fellow new grads out there!!!
  8. Lol.....i think the shortage is always there. Nurses are working understaffed everywhere and with the rapidly aging population, there is always going to be a demand for nurses. But in the same sense there are so many unemployed nurses out there (including me ) especially right now, since many hospitals at the moment are on a hiring freeze in fear of the uncertain economy. It seems like the target are new graduates. Its just a terrible time to look for a job, although statics show that nursing is one of the professions which still has job opening and is hiring along with engineering and pharmacy despite the recession. But as for you since you are going to be doing your BSN, minimum two years there, things should change till then. So i don't think the situation will stay the way it is for forever. Its just typically not a good time at the moment. I say don't be discouraged, if you have a passion for nursing then go for it. Nurses are always in demand. And as for experience, make sure you hunt down internships during summer and work like as a tech part time if you can fit it with your classes, which i know could be hard to juggle the two. That should put you ahead of the game to be more competitive.
  9. Have you ever heard of http://www.globalnursingsolutions.com/, i have heard that they are global recruiters, i don't know much about it personally but i thought it would be worth checking. Its amazing how this economy is affecting everyone in just a short amount of time. And the fact that there is minimal hope for F1 students is really unfortunate. But i hope and pray that this situation gets better for the better. Good luck with everything. God always have a way, and with your determination, you will make it.
  10. Hi everyone, I really would appreciate if anyone out there knows what hospitals are hiring at this moment in Richmond. I am a new grad who has been looking out for job since January. I have heard from a nursing manager that MCV was on hiring freeze but what about the other hospitals such as bonsecours, etc. Does anyone work in a hosptial in Richmond who might have heard anything. I see several openings in their website which i filled out mostly the new graduate positions, but no luck yet. Should i apply for the specific floors as well? Do any of you have any ideas?? i am really confused of where to look. I called almost all the places i applied, and they do not say one way or another, or that they may be in a hiring freeze, but what i get from them is that they are still in the decsion process:rolleyes: Help.....what's the deal?
  11. Associates degree in Nursing
  12. Easyatmidnight- Thanks for your suggestion. I am glad that you didn't go through of what i am going through. I guess if i had applied right after graduation before the whole economy hitting floor bottom, i may have not had this situation. I just waited too long to start applying. Most of my friends who applied in 08 got calls right away. Relocating is not an option for me right now, i am going to try my hardest and keep my fingers and toes crossed!!
  13. I am one of those who thought "nursing is a recession proof profession" where i would not have any problem of finding a Job. I graduated in May 08', wanted to wait until i took my NCLEX before starting to work, which might have been a bad move from my part considering the situation right now!! After doing so starting in January, i have been applying, applying and applying. However i am not getting any calls, and when i do call, their reply is that they are still in the decision process. It has been 2 months now.....am still looking....its really tiresome. What scares me the most is on top of the December graduates, there are the soon to be graduating May graduates, hence the application pool is going to be swamped. I live in Richmond, VA. I am mostly filling out the "new grad application" positions, thinking that it incorporates almost all the units available to new grads. Am i doing something wrong here? Should i also feel out the specialty units where their qualification states 1-2 years experience is preferred. Do you have any tips for me to make my application stand out? Thank you all in advance for your input!!
