Hired at UC Davis MC: Where should I live??

Published

Hi all! I am very happy to report I was just offered a nursing position at UCDMC. I currently live in San Francisco and will move to Sacramento for the job. Can anyone recommend a good neighborhood that is relatively lively, safe, with an easy commute to the med center? Any other tips?

Thanks for your help! :-)

Congrats on your new job!

As previously posts stated, Midtown is great. Some areas in downtown are ok. I would stay away from the areas directly surrounding UCDMC. Look at a map. Stay north of 50 and east of 80. Davis is ok but will probably get boring if you're from SF. I mean Sacramento is no match for SF but you can find some great places in midtown.

hi ca rn 444...just curious, when did you receive the job offer? did the manager call you or human resources? thanks for your reply! and to answer your question... i think carmichael is a best place to live... especially an area closer to highway 80 west towards sacramento... it is safe and also close to ucd if you are close to highway.

I've lived in SF, and I also lived in Sacramento for 3 years prior to that -currently I'm elsewhere, but I'm hopefully moving back to Sac. I know the town pretty well.

If you enjoy riding your bike, I vote for Sacramento. It gets a bad rap, but really there are a ton of up-and-coming businesses, a really fun "Second Saturday" scene in the summer, when the midtown area closes up and art galleries have wine tasting, music, food, and art on display. It's all walkable. If you're an avid cyclist, like me, the American River Bike Path is amazing- personally I always found cycling in SF to be akin to taking my life in my hands, but the Bike Path goes for 50 miles (all the way to Folsom Lake), and it's LOVELY. The Sac Co-op on S and 28th is amazing. The Fox and Goose on R and 11th is a great Irish Pub. Kru on J and 25th has the best sushi I have ever had, to this day, and I've been looking for better (including in LA, Santa Monica, SF, Vegas, etc). There are a multitude of coffee shops, restaurants, places to walk, play, explore, and take classes. There's a pretty cool climbing gym out on 16th.

Midtown/Boulevard park area is great for riding your bike/walking anywhere. The McKinley Park area is nice because you can hop on 39th and ride your bike straight to work. The busiest streets in the area are H, J, Folsom/Capital (think "M" St but with a different name) and P/Q. Alhambra divides McKinley park area from midtown. The closer you get to the teens in the A/B/C/Ds the closer you get to homeless encampments near the river, so if you live on B/C/D st, try to get at least nearer to 22nd-28th. 29th parallels Business 80.

If you don't want to drive to work, you can bike easily. Midtown is the most fun for walking around. McKinley Park/East Sac is pretty nice, and the Fabulous Forties are gorgeous. This area tends to be a bit more expensive, but not much. Elmhurst is right next to UCDMC.

Hope that helps.

Hi,

Congrats on the job! I had an interview with them recently also. How long did it take to hear from them after your interview?

I had an interview with them recently as well. They said it takes 4-6 weeks to hear back from them... now, I am really really nervous and I think I gave up because it sounds like they already gave their job offers...

Midtown, definitely! Tons of shops, cafes, farmers markets, night life, art galleries...all the things you mentioned. If you lived in midtown, you could essentially walk everywhere you need to go on your days off...though you'd have to drive to UCDMC. I lived in midtown for years and absolutely loved it! It's like its own little small city...definitely check it out! Some areas are quieter than others, I lived near 26th and G and it was a perfect location. I could easily walk to coffee shops, the grocery or restaurants and McKinley Park (which is gorgeous!) was just a few blocks away. Highly highly recommend! I can't wait to move back to the neighborhood!

Davis is a great place to live!!! It's my home! Make sure to buy a bike! Oh I miss the farmer's market, arboretum, ciocolat and moshi moshi :(

I did my undergrad degree at UCD so I lived in Davis and loved it. Definitely check it out! :)

Thanks for your help! ?

How did you get hired? I am a new grad in the sac area and I have applied to hundreds of jobs! Any advice would be helpful.

I just applied for the OR training program at UCDMC. How is the training program? Did they give you enough time to become comfortable scrubbing and circulating? What are they looking for in applicants?

Thanks
