Hired for one shift but scheduled for another!

I was recently hired into an ED as a part-time RN, evening shifts. I was also told that I will have to work two winter holidays. I have been orienting on the unit for three days and the new schedule has come out. Most of my shifts are starting at 0830. This will not work for my family situation and does not really seem like an evening shift to me. Also I am scheduled for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and new Years Eve, all twelve hour shifts. I want to talk to my manager but do not want to seem like a trouble maker just starting the job. ADVICE PLEASE!!!!!!!!!

Most of the time...for orientation...you will be scheduled days so that your skills can be assessed. I would check with your manager and see what the reasoning is for your schedule. while people are hired for specific they are not guaranteed....only your hours are and even those can be canceled for low patient days.

Many departments utilize 12 hour shifts on the holidays to give the maximum amount of staff off...you will benefit next year.

How....if you work 12 hours on Christmas Day and 12 hours on New Years eve...2 winter....how is that 3

News years day is the holiday. So you have the holiday off. Where I work I did 12 hour nights. If I had New Years off I worked 7p-7a on New Years. If I worked the holiday I went in on New Years even at 7p-7a. This was for every holiday! So I worked some portion of every single holiday...but the floor viewed it that I had holidays off.

New Year's Eve isn't a holiday....New Years day is. You are working 2 holidays.

I would definitely ask about that. As far as holidays go, you have no seniority ...but the fact that you're working during the day and were hired for nights doesn't seem quite right. I would respectfully bring the "misunderstanding" up to a supervisor. Even if you're desperate to hold onto the job, you can at least mention it and "test the waters" for a possible solution.

In my experience, you generally need to be flexible during orientation. And legal holidays do not include the "eves" ...though SOME hospitals schedule holidays creatively to accommodate the popularity of the "eves".

Do you have it in writing that you only work evenings? I agree with the PP that this may just be orientation, but if you don't talk to the manager, how will he/she know there is a problem?

On orientation they usually don't want to pay you anything extra, like shift differential. (But maybe they are ok with holiday pay?) Also, Is your schedule arranged to be with a preceptor? That could explain the holiday scheduling. I agree that they want to observe your skills right now. I considered my first few months as an extended interview. But I was a new grad, your mileage may vary.

Not all places consider the eves holidays any more.....the OP needs to check the HR policy....but if the winter holidays are Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years DAY....you are required to work 2 of them..and they are....New Years EVE doesn't count as far as HR even though many consider it a holiday for themselves.

Many don't consider the "eves" of the holiday's.....the facilities I worked will start holiday pay at 7PM on the holiday eve....because days can still get home to celebrate with their families.

New people into the profession have misunderstandings about holiday requirements....they need to check with their facilities policy.
