Hillsborough Community College - Spring 2014

Published

Hello all,

I wanted to start a thread for those applying to HCC's Spring 2014 nursing program. I am a stay at home mom. I know its early but I wanted to get as much info as possible. The deadline isn't until 6/1. I'm a current HCC student. My pre-req GPA is 3.57 (all A's 1 B and 1 C ), I'm hoping that this is good enough to get me a spot in the program.

What is everyone elses GPA? I heard its lower for the Spring.

Hi everyone,, Im super stoked! After being rejected from the HCC program I have still been awaiting a reply from SPC and I just found out I got in!! If anyone is attending SPC let me know please!

Congrats....Im very happy for you and wish you well in the SPC nursing program.

Yeah...maybe we can all sit by each other at orientation. I think I figured out who Rosaly and Felix were. I remember you (DCrux) from the fingerprinting incident :) I was so ready to go....long day!

Hi iscape... Sorry i didnt intraduce myself, I did not realize you were there. Jesse & Rosaly were the 2 roudy ones in the front of the class that kept messing up, I think they killed the poor dummy. I was the quiet one sitting in the back...;)

Long time no see you, guys !! How's everybody doing? Do we have a FB group or anyother way of communication??? maybe I'm missing something here....are you guys ready for Orientation day???

Hi Cindy. Nope, I've kinda slacked on making the FB group. I'll have to get on that after we all meet up at orientation here shortly! I'm pretty stoked for orientation myself..

He looked pretty darn dead before me and Rosaly got to 'em. However, I'm sure he's up and walking around after that awesome mouth-to-mouth Rosaly gave him (I am so going to get slapped for that) :roflmao:.

Congratulations to all of you for your hard work and dedication so far!! I've really enjoyed reading your posts. I am in my second semester of prereqs with A's so far. I am taking prereqs for both SPC and HCC and applying to Radiation Therapy school as a backup plan but I really want to get into RN school. The way my courses and the deadlines fall, I won't be able to apply to HCC RN until Spring of 2015 but I can apply to SPC in Fall of 14. I'm terrified my GPA will slip and I'm also terrified of taking Algebra, AP2 and Statistics at once with one other course dependent on my path. Next spring semester I have my last Algebra remedial course, Micro and AP1 which officially starts my difficult coursework. However, I'm thoroughly looking forward to the challenge.

Again, thanks for the info and guidance and good luck to everyone on theirs paths!

No worries!! I was sitting close to the door (glasses, black sweater). I was quiet too since I wasn't sure who everyone was. :)

Hi Sioux:

Taking Algebra, AP2, and Statistics together is going to be one rough semester!?! Is there any way you can spread it out a little bit? I (personally) found AP II to be somewhat easier than AP I, so if you were successful in AP I you should have no problems in AP II.

As for College Algebra and Statistics together.. these are rough classes unless you really love mathematics and its processes. This is especially true if you plan on taking them at HCC Dale Mabry, since I have heard from various sources the program is quite a bit more rigorous at that campus.

I took both classes over the summer semester(s) at Dale Mabry on purpose so that I could focus on them without any other classes to distract me. I am very glad I did so since it most likely contributed to my success.

Regardless, I wish you nothing but the very best in your pre-reqs! Strive for those A's so that you are as competitive as possible. Good luck!

Hi! Thanks for your feedback. I need all I can get. I don't have too many options because of the deadline for SPC. If I want, I can swap it out for Micro which I am registered for this semester. Which would make my schedule look more like AP1, MAT28, STAT and then next semester would be Algebra, AP2, Micro and either Ethics in Health Care or Speech. I've been struggling with what to take when... I'm just really trying to avoid wasting anymore time.

Hmm. Well, I guess it would really depend how you are in sciences and math coupled with your study skills. For myself personally, my stress level would be too high taking College Algebra, AP2, and Micro in the same semester. Ethics is more philosophy and not too hardcore as long as you're able to think 'outside the box' with a given scenario and place an ethical theory towards it (i.e. hedonism, natural law, etc). Speech for me was a piece of cake (SPC-1602) and I even hate public speaking -- perhaps I just had a good professor; send me a PM and I'll let you know her name.

It is recommended that students never take two science courses in a semester (according to HCC). However, I have known people that have done it successfully. They were driven and killed themselves for excellence to ensure they received the "A" they needed in their core classes. I would suggest that if there was any way you could avoid doing that, you consider it strongly.

Think of it this way: pace yourself somewhat and make an "A" in your core classes (College Algebra, Micro, A&P I and II, Sociology) -- or try and meet a schedule and perhaps earn a "B" and be less competitive. Myself personally, I would take the slower route to ensure I received an "A" and mastered the material rather than chance a "B".

Remember, you can only re-take a class if you make a "D" or an "F". If you earn a "B" or a "C", you're stuck with that letter grade according to HCC and many others schools in the Florida Higher Education system.

Just my $0.02 and I wish you the very best!

OMG!!!!! Im so behind. I dont know any of these things. Please, anyone tell me if im wrong. OK, it seems like we need CPR certification, uniforms, books, a sthetoscope. How do you guys know alll this? Have any of you recieved any letters with all this info? Last I heard from HCC was the acceptance letter, you had to reply telling them if you accepted and also you had to get fingerprints done at the Ybor campus. How do you know which uniforms to buy, or what books? Please can anyone help me out. I just got sooo stressed by reading all these posts.

Odaimys:

Hang in there. No worries as of yet, since most of us are just trying to get ahead of the curve. Most of everything will be explained during orientation and they will set the due dates that all of us need to follow. Those that you see (myself included) are just 'over-acheivers' trying to stay one step ahead of the game.

Once you've got your acceptance letter:

1) You need to accept your position in the program. If you have not done this, you are behind the curve. I'm actually pretty sure the deadline is way past..

2) Pay for your fingerprinting/background check and have it completed

That's officially it for the most part.

----

However, before we start the program in January, we need to have some additional things completed. This entails:

* We will be assigned our campus assignments here shortly. There are some 'unoffical bets' it might actually be this weekend, however we shall see.

* We need to complete our physical. We will be instructed at orientation as to how this should be performed and issued our forms to do so. Those that have stated that they have already completed it, are using forms that have been issued very recently in the past to do so. However, there is always the small chance that things may change between what we have been given and what we will be presented with during orientation.

* We need to complete a drug test. This will happen our second day during orientation.

* Supposedly, we will register for our NP I class during orientation. Felix is a pretty darn wise dude has hasn't ever steered me wrong, and I trust him.

In between all of this and orientation, you are free to get your supplies in order for classes in January. This consists of:

* Scrubs according to HCC's requirements (see Student Handbook)

* Name tag(s)

* Patches for the sleeves of our uniform

* Nursing shoes

* Completion of an accredited and recognized CPR BLS (basic life support) program

* Immunizations consisting of MMR, Hep B series, and others. See the immunization form.

* Purchasing our books from the curriculum list -- which they will go over at orientation.

... and others, but I am too damn tired to remember them.

The biggest thing between now and then is that you accept your position in the program and get your fingerprinting/background check done. The rest will be explained during orientation (ad nauseum I am quite sure) for us to assimilate.

I hope that helps. This week has been a total blur, and it's only Tuesday (well.. Wednesday now that its past midnight).

Hang in there.. you've got time,

DCrux
