Hello all,
I thought I would start a thread for those of us applying to HCC's Spring 2013 nursing program. I am a Veterinary Technician/stay at home mom. I'm gathering everything for my application and hoping to drop it off at HCC soon. The deadline isn't until 6/1 but they recommend turning it in at least 30 days in advance. I'm a current HCC student. I was planning on applying for Fall this year, but am now expecting a little girl to arrive in July so spring it is! My pre-req GPA is 3.86 (all A's and 1 B), I'm hoping that this is good enough to get me a spot in the program for DM evening classes. Good luck to all!

I would be interested in getting together after orientation. Just curious Gradius, are you planning on moving to the Tampa area or do you plan on commuting?
Commuting at least for Semester 1, as sadly I have a lease here until April 4, 2013. It will suck big time but I will have to do it, I'm not about to break my lease in January when it's scheduled to end 4 months later anyway. Besides, those 4 months will fly.
However, I fully intend to investigate a move to Tampa in time for a yearlong lease to coincide with Semester 2 and 3.
Here's the link for continuing education at HCC's Allied Health CPR classes:
Kinda off topic but does anyone know if they'll accept the 2000-level science classes as well? For example, A&P is a pre-req and the class that HCC offers is BSC-1085, whereas other colleges offer BSC-2085. The 2000-level classes are tested on a higher level. The reason I ask is because I'm taking this awful Trig class online to try and bump up my gpa this semester to replace my B in Algebra and I'm failing miserably (well not failing- I have a B which to me defeats the purpose of taking it anyway). I was wondering if I could take A&P from another college at a 2000-level to replace my B in A&P at HCC. Any ideas? Science is easy to me so I'd take A&P all over again...math- not so much...LOL.
Thanks for any advice!!
KKJA8855,I'm transferring BSC2085, BSC2086 with labs (A&P 1 and 2) and MCB2010 plus lab from St Pete College as my nursing prereqs. The admissions office wrote me an email saying they consider the equivalent to the lower level prereqs that HCC offers. SPC also accepted my wifes BSC1085/6 from HCC and gave her credit for the higher number.

Shauny2k3 is correct. Florida has a CCN (Common Course Numbering System) where BSC1085 and BSC2085 are the same thing. For a slightly more in depth explanation if you'd like, go here to Valencia CC's catalog (where I have 2 degrees from), click on the link that says "State Course Numbering System and Course Prefixes and Headings" and read the paragraph on the right starting with "Transfer of any successfully completed course from one participating institution to another is guaranteed..." (pg 213 in the PDF)
Thanks! Maybe I found a loop-hole!? LOL I guess my question is not if they accept the higher level courses, it's whether they'll accept them over the lower level courses from HCC if you have taken both. I'll check with an Advisor tomorrow morning and post the answer in case anyone else needs the info. If any of us get denied d/t GPA and we took A&P 1 or 2 or MCB at HCC (or any other 1000-level college), a good place to start bumping it up would be a retake of a science course at the higher level where anything below an A was earned...

No need... if I'm following what you're trying to say right, that's not exactly how it works... take Grade Forgiveness statewide... technically you are only allowed to have it twice as an undergrad, and only if you earn a D or an F on your first attempt on a course. A C is considered passing which is why you can't retake Anatomy 1 again, for instance. In other words, say you got a C in Anatomy 1 at HCC as BSC1085 and you tried to enroll again at HCC, the system wouldn't let you do it since you already have credit.
Now, if you went down the street to SPC who runs Anatomy 1 as BSC2085, could you enroll there in it? Sure. But if you tried to transfer it back to HCC, it would not be accepted. In essence... like I pointed out that link to you with the VCC catalog... in ALL of Florida, ignore the first number in the four digit course numbers. If the last 3 numbers are the same then the course is IDENTICAL. BSC2085 might be offered at one place as in School XYZ's eyes, it's designed for a Sophomore, where something like BSC1005, Gen Biology might be a prereq; at the same time BSC1085 might be offered at School ABC, where there is no science prereq required before it, thus making it "freshman designed" in ABC's eyes.
Bottom line, in regards to anyone that may get denied to GPA, the ONLY option they will have is to take a higher math for next time (though I still maintain you really didn't need to take Trig as you will get in with your 3.52, appeal or not. )
Between my working at a Transfer Student Services office at UCF several years back and personal reading/learning about this stuff... this is what it is. Higher math is the only option.
My 2 cents.

Glad you said that, my Micro + lab credit is coming from SPC also, was slightly worried that HCC wouldn't take it due to HCC offering Micro as MCB1000 if I'm not mistaken. Just a fraction. But glad they will.

I checked into this before i took Micro and lab at PHCC. PHCC is a 2000 level course where HCC is a 1000 course. I wanted to keep my options open to be able to apply at either school. I was told by the Nursing Dept that they will accept the higher course and consider that the pre req is met.
