Hello all,
I thought I would start a thread for those of us applying to HCC's Spring 2013 nursing program. I am a Veterinary Technician/stay at home mom. I'm gathering everything for my application and hoping to drop it off at HCC soon. The deadline isn't until 6/1 but they recommend turning it in at least 30 days in advance. I'm a current HCC student. I was planning on applying for Fall this year, but am now expecting a little girl to arrive in July so spring it is! My pre-req GPA is 3.86 (all A's and 1 B), I'm hoping that this is good enough to get me a spot in the program for DM evening classes. Good luck to all!

I have a list of all the shots that we need I will post them later tonight I also was told that we need insurance to be in the program as well. one of my coworkers started the program this fall so I have a lot of insight onto the things that we will need. I will post on any new information on tonight.
Oh wow, they require us to carry our own health insurance or they suggest it and if we don't, then we practice at our own risk? They don't cover us under their own clinical policy and that becomes part of the fees for the program? I'm confused...surely they wouldn't require someone to have it. Health insurance is expensive and I have a job! LOL I can't imagine a full-time student not working having to come up with a monthly premium payment...Craziness! If you wouldn't mind asking your coworker that's in the program and letting me know, I'd appreciate it a ton! =D
Shauny2k3- thanks for the info...I live in Polk County so I'll check out the vaccinations through the health dept here! :)

A couple years ago I had what can best be described as a "just in case" type of plan through Humana One. $7500 a year was your max out of pocket. Not necessarily good for routine Doctor's visits but like I said... a "just in case" type of thing, I don't recall much else besides that. It was roughly $50/month which is reasonable.
[My deduction is that they require us to have Health Insurance since we'll be in Hospitals a lot so they think we'll get sick all the time; but I could be wrong, who knows?]
I just started a job this week with a crazy salary plus benefits but sadly it is temporary through early January I think... so I might look into the Humana One plan again myself prior to our January start.
Ok so I just called the Nursing department and spoke with an assistant and they told me letters will be sent out in late September/early October. That's pretty late compared to previous years...I'm hoping they're padding those dates a little but who knows!
That is just awful! Here we all are getting excited for next week and now this. Boo. Boo I say.
Shauny2k3 you make some valid points re: needing time for appeals, etc. If this late September stuff holds up then I think that's detrimental for everyone.

Hmm, good question. First, look at all your records as many only need doing once in your lifetime. If you don't have insurance, you'll usually find that the county health department is the cheapest. It's work applying for Florida Medicaid, as they also cover most vaccines at 100%. Pollk County Health Department is very cheap compared to other places, e.g. Td vaccine is $27 compared to $45 at Hillsborough County Health Dept and $55 at Walgreens.
