Hillsborough Community College Nursing Fall 2016

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hey everyone!

I hadn't seen a thread started yet for the fall '16 entry to the program and thought I would start one, since the application deadline is only 2 months away. I'm excited and nervous about the process....just hoping my GPA is good enough to get in. I've taken the TEAS V and just finishing up my last pre-req to apply. I'm currently in North Dakota and will be retiring from the Air Force next year. So, that alone is frustrating since I have to call or e-mail with any questions.

Who else is applying?

Chris

I came back to Florida to take the test and check on my house. I did well on the test and if that was a factor it would help (got an 82). I guess it all depends on how many people apply and what their GPAs are.

wow, great score!

Regarding campuses, I don't think there is really any "superior" campus, according to the nursing information sessions they've been having, clinical assignments and simulations will vary and in location and flexibility of transportation is vital so everyone has an equal experience. It's nice to hear that Southshore is nice. I might have to take a chemistry class there since the one I want isn't offer on my campus.

Oh my, GPA. From some students in my class, I've been hearing 4.0's from two applicants in my anatomy II class. This makes me quite nervous. Due to taking dual enrollment and AP exams, my GPA is unfortunately calculated with 18 hours instead of the 21 (no clue how I'll compete with the rest of the GPA's) On top of this, I'm also getting my A.A. requirements unlike some of the students with the 4.0 because they're only taking the needed prerequisites. TL;DR I have a 3.55 at the moment.

Sorry for rambling, finals and finalizing the application have been really stressful and this community seems like the only place that understands. Thanks for listening and your curiosity. :)

You're not rambling, lol. :) Yes, this semester has been the most intense by far. Wrapping up the last pre-reqs, while at the same time- trying to also study for the teas exam was mentally and physically exhausting for me .You are one busy girl though! Have you taken your test yet?

It may be a good idea for you to take chemistry at South Shore to get a feel for the campus. They actually just added a brand new science building. I'll also be taking chem and stats next semester.

Good luck on your finals:up:

I'm also getting my A.A. requirements

If you are finishing up with an AA, why would you apply to a program to get an AS?

I'm completing my AA because it will satisfy my FKL's(Foundations of Knowledge and Learning) which is required for USF's BSN program. I'm applying to the nursing program to get my ASN because it's the best option for me in terms of cost efficiency and ease of transition from the ASN to BSN. There is also a HCC/USF concurrent program that allows students to take courses needed to finish their bachelors while earning their ASN at HCC, given that they complete the state-mandated nursing pre-requisites which overlaps with AA and FKL requirements as well. There's many ways to go about it but by completing my AA, it will make these options available to me.

I'm taking the TEAS December 14(yes, I know, lighting the fire right under me :dead:). This is because many students in my class have been taking the TEAS and also trying to study for their pre-req exams thinking that if they take it earlier, they can take it again. I'd rather take it once, focused, instead of paying another $66 for a retake. I am a bit concerned with taking the TEAS, just the stories of screens not immediately going to the results, it's nothing like what they've studied, not enough time and all things that can go wrong. Any tips?

I'm thinking I might do that. Southshore is the newest campus, it's great that they built a new science building. Stats is tons of fun, in my opinion, easier than college algebra.

We're almost there! :) Good luck on your finals to you as well.

The TEAS study guide is a good route to go. I went thru it twice and did the practice tests in the book and I ended up with an 82. I'm just hoping my GPA is good enough at this point. That is what I'm stressed about as the semester ends and I sent in my application. Good luck on the test.

Haha, I was one of those students :p Better to be safe than sorry, lol. I used the TEAS manual from ATI, and purchased the practice exams. I studied for about a month (few hours a day). Everyone has a different experience with the exam. Some say it wasn't that bad, while others have a crappy experience- like myself. My issue was time and the randomness of the questions. Science was the hardest for me, and the most difficult to study for. 1/2 of the questions that were on my test weren't similar or even covered in the ati manual. Again, that's just my experience, yours can be totally different as every test has a different pool of questions. Fortunately, I was able to pass on the first try, thank god.

Anyway, if you're strong in English and math, than all you'll need is some brushing up, as both sections are pretty basic. The reading section was a little tricky... the passages and questions are much longer than in the guide, and as you know, we don't have that much time. So, if you're not quick with comprehension, then it would be ideal for you to time yourself while doing the practice tests. If you don't have timed test anxiety- you should be fine. Just stay calm and make sure to take your breaks in between sections! Remember, all you need is a 60--totally doable! Good luck, girl:up:

Specializes in BSN student.

Hi everyone. So glad finals is finally over. Now, i am a bit excited about applying in the program. I will be dropping off my application this week. Hope we will continue this thread.

Have you guys thought about taking other courses while waiting for your acceptance letter? I thought about going to PHCC and start taking classes towards my BSN (Pre-requisites) while waiting for my acceptance letter. I was told by the Health Science Admin. that the approval notice will normally be sent out between 12-15 weeks, and the program usually starts around August. I also asked the lady if it's okay to take other classes either those that are required prior to graduation or towards BSN while waiting for the approval letter, and she doesn't see any problems with it. What do you think ladies?

Regarding TEAS score and GPA, I asked the Admin if the TEAS score is going to affect our admission to the program, and she said that as long as you get 60% and up right then they will rank applicants based on their GPA's. In other words, what matters more is if you have an excellent GPA not your TEAS score, of course, you have to pass it to get admitted.

Well I dropped my application in the mail today since I had to send it from my current location. I added the self addressed postcard and did a track on the package. I need to know since I can't drop it off in person. Can't wait for my final grade to post. I wish I could take some other classes to be ready to possibly to the HCC/BSN program but I'll be moving come June and I didn't register in time for a class in for the Spring since I'll be busy with my transition out of the Air Force. I already have an AA from the Community College of the Air Force in Criminal Justice so I'll push for that to meet the criteria. Only time will tell. I wish all good luck in the application process.
