Hillsborough Community College Fall 2011

Published

Hello all HCC Fall 2011 hopefuls! I have been following the Fall 2010 and Spring 2011 threads and thought maybe it was time to start Fall 2011 now that the application process has started.

I just turned my application in this past week and received my confirmation notice in the mail. Anyone else out there that has turned in their application?

What are your plans over the next 8 months to prepare for the first semester (provided we get in)?

I actually e-mail R.S., the Program Manager for the Nursing Program about the orientation dates in the letter and here was her reply:

"The letters go out from Admissions. They get the dates from me, but they prepare the letters. Actually, we have had to make a slight change anyway. Orientation is now Tues 6/21 and Weds. 6/22. I will let them know about the mismatched dates."

R.S. was in charge of the orientation last Fall and the program, which is why I e-mailed her regarding orientation.......

Thanks PLR_Nursing, I'm gonna need help coming up with an excuse to miss work on a Tuesday and Wednesday. Anybody have some ideas? I've been keeping school a secret from work and I'll have to continue to keep up the charade throughout the program. It's not easy, but it's very necessary.

do you have personal days? If so then you shouldn't have to tell them that why you have to take days. If not good luck... I will think on this and get creative for you!

Thanks Kikilynn, I work for a small company. No real personal days. I get time off, but everyone wants to know what I'm doing or why I'm out. (and especially if I'll be available by cell phone / email) Let me know what you come up with. Thanks in advance.

Thx plr nursing! I figured there were quite a few! good luck to all!

In my opinion 12 to 15 people is not that many alternates. I think for the Spring 2011 term there were 174 people admitted and like I said I think almost all the alternates got seats, I know a very happy person got mine that I gave up. If your an alternate, just keep praying that the door will be opened. You would be amazed how many people decide they don't want to take the "seat".

I am an alternate w/ a 3.57 as well and know one other w/ a 3.57 that has to be the cut off point I wish we knew how many alternates there are?

I was going to appeal with my 3.57, but it sounds like 3.57 was a popular GPA and the cut off. :( Oh well. I did ask MG how many alternates they chose and she didn't answer. She simply said that after the appeal process is complete, they will then fill the 145 seats and the alternate status will change to "admitted." She also included that she cannot guarantee that the "alternate" status will change. Ugh.

So we now know of four of us who have a 3.57 status who are alternates... How do they put in order alternates who have the same GPA?

Although I can't swear to it, I believe I heard during the orientation that I attended for the Spring term that there were about 12 to 15 alternates for the Spring 2011 term and I thought they were all admitted.

Thank for the info PLR! I was thinking they might have selected up to 20 alternates! 12-15 sounds much better to me.

I would love to know how many applications were submitted for this process. I've heard around 600 in the past, but I'm thinking there might have been a lot more. It seems like people have applied from all over the state? Whow knows.

This is cut and pasted from the Health Sciences Admissions Handbook (pages 17 and 18) regarding how students are ordered for acceptance priority. I hope this helps clear up any confusion.

Ranking by grade point average: Applicants are ranked by grade point average, which

is calculated using the grades of the prerequisite courses required for admission to a

particular Health Sciences Program. The calculation will include prerequisite grades earned

from other institutions. If an applicant has completed a required course with a Pass/Fail

grade, then there will be no grade used for that course in the calculation; however, the

applicant will have satisfied the requirement.

Selections are made based on the highest grade point averages (GPA) and the number of

seats available in each individual program. In the event there are fewer seats remaining

than the number of applicants with identical GPAs, the following criteria are used to

determine program admittance:

1. Applicants with the highest college cumulative grade point average in all courses

taken excluding preparatory course work.

2. If students have identical college cumulative GPAs, then preference will be given

to the student who has earned more total college credits.

3. Applicants for admissions consideration into the Paramedic Program will have their

GPA calculations made from the grades earned in the EMT-B coursework. If there

are no grades available for the EMT-B coursework, selection will be made based

upon the GPA of other college level courses taken which must equal or exceed six

(6) credits.

If the program does not require prerequisite courses, applicants will be ranked based on

their overall grade point average excluding preparatory course work. Selections will be

18

made based on the highest overall grade point averages and the number of seats available

in each individual program. If two or more students have identical college cumulative GPAs,

then preference will be given to the student who has earned more total college credits.

Alternates are designated for each program in the event students that are selected decline.

Alternates are determined in the same manner as selects to the program.

If an applicant uses a CLEP score for one or more prerequisite course, the GPA will be

calculated on the actual grades earned in classes, and total college credits will be

calculated on actual college classes. An original copy must be attached to the application.

However, the applicant will be given credit for satisfying the prerequisite.

Repeating/withdrawing from prerequisite courses: Applicants may have 2 attempts

per prerequisite course taken after 1997 on their academic record without being penalized.

After two attempts, penalties are as follows:

• Minus .2 from the prerequisite GPA for each course attempted a 3rd time

• Minus .6 from the prerequisite GPA for each course attempted a 4th time

• Minus 1.2 from the prerequisite GPA for each course attempted a 5th time

• Minus 2.4 from the prerequisite GPA for each course attempted a 6th time

Withdrawals, academic withdrawals and other non-calculated gradesare

considered attempts:

The State of Florida statute prohibits HCC from allowing a student to retake a course when

the student has taken the course previously and received a “C” or higher grade. In

addition, HCC will transfer in a course from another institution, but if the student has taken

that course before and received a grade of “C” or higher, the more recent grade will not be

used in any grade point calculation. (Specific Authority 1001.02(1) FS; Law Implemented

Thank you GC2CRNA! That makes sense. I have a ton of credit hours since I already have a degree... but my gpa is just average from my earlier/slacker years in college. Oh well!

I thought I would be heartbroken if I didn't get in, but since I have a back-up plan, I'm okay with whatever happens, happens. But let's hope for that call HCC! I want to get started on my RN ASAP!

Background check was was easy. It was $63.00.

Anyone wanna look for books and read a bit before we start the program? Do you guys know if they're going to have new editions of the NP1 book?

Which books are required for NPI? I bought a NCLEX book to review, but I don't know what to look at for textbooks. By the way with Borders going out of business you can get a NCLEX book pretty cheap. I picked up a Princeton review book with 8 full length practice tests for 25 bucks.
