Hillsborough Community College Fall 2010

Published

hello! i just joined this lovely and informative site after lurking for a few weeks. i'm planning to apply for the program after this fall semester. (need to finish a&pII and college algebra).

who else?! :)

edit: can someone walk me through the application process? i know it's pretty easy, but i like knowing 100%! i'm not sure if an adviser would help me much. i know you need high school transcripts, an hcc application and a nursing application. then you just gather all the papers (including money?) in like a.... manila envelope and mail away? or can you electronically send your high school transcripts to them? thank you.

That's for the semester... But there is also a Well Elder Care Plan which consists of a lengthy interview of a person over 65, a Nursing Care Plan, and a group presentation (at the end of the semester). Don't yet know how much time each of these takes. The most important thing to know is that it IS DO-able. People get through this program all the time with family comittments, work comittments, etc...just GO FOR IT!!:)

So positive Nick. You're awesome :)! Are you and KMan in the same class? Also, what clinical site did everyone select?

Thanks, Tebyrd! :) Yes, kmangirl and I are in the same class. I have UCH Carrolwood for clinicals and she has either T&C or St. Joe's. Hope you get a good night's sleep tonight and have a wonderful first day of clinicals tomorrow!! You will do great! Hope that little one of yours is doing fabulous!

After this first week, does anyone else feel like they are swimming in a sea full of information and can't figure out where the shoreline is? I feel extremely overwhelmed and out of my element. How is everyone else coping and how are you approaching each chapter?

Persgirl,

I feel the exact same way you do. It doesnt seem like they give any direction on where we should focus. Are we suppose to memorize EVERYTHING? I am still struggling to figure out what to memorize in the calculations. I did not realize that they would be spending no time on the calculations in class. Two tests in two weeks and no direction. I know it is only week one but I am already stressed. Not enough time in the day!

Can anyone who has already gotten through NP1 give advice on what we need to know for the calculations test? Any advice on how to approach the chapters in the P&P book? Thanks!

Is anyone else having trouble answering the NCLEX questions at the end of the chapters? I feel that some of the questions are beyond my medical knowledge base at this point.

Persgirl...

I would highly suggest that you buy an NCLEX review book. There are TONS of them out there. I bought NCLEX-RN Strategies for the Registered Nursing Licensing Exam 2010 Edition by KAPLAN, about 6 months ago, and went through the entire book. There are two similar books on the supplemental list of books for NP1: "Fundamentals Success" and "Med-Surg Success". The Kaplan NCLEX book that I mentioned first, goes through and explains the NCLEX style questions, answers, and rationale for picking the right choice. It explains ways to eliminate certain answers, etc... I am SO glad that I heard to go through some of this ahead of time, as I didn't realize that ALL of our tests (except for Clinical Calculations) will be in this format!! I am STILL not totally comfortable with it, but if I hadn't done what I did, I would be COMPLETELY lost right now. Take a deep breath, and buy a book ASAP...I promise that it will help!:)

Thanks for everyone's help! I'm so excited and can't wait!

Hi Everyone,

Well, I am with the UCH/HCC cohort, and from everyones posts, I can tell I'm not alone in feeling overwhelmed! Almost EVERYONE in my group is a CNA or Tech already and knows most of the things we will be learning over the next few weeks, except for me and a few others. It's slightly intimidating, but at the same time nice to have people around to help.

From any of the persons I've talked to when it comes to Potter Perry, I have gotten the advise to make sure and pay attention to the boxes, and go through all of the NCLEX questions in the books you bought (supplemental) and in the book itself. (The CD that came with the book is worthless, has anyone else looked at it?).

I don't think it's physically attainable to memorize EVERYTHING in every chapter we are expected to read. Nice to know we are in the same boat and can be eachothers cheerleaders!

I just got through the Med chapter- yikes!

Get a PATHOPHYSIOLOGY book ! Will be so useful especially for NP4 and dont forget about using the school library books ,great for care plans..:nurse: And just some advice ...Focus completely on school forget about your friends , going out to the clubs and warn your family/significant other(s) of your absence...they will understand! And definetly get a Tech job even if just one day a week PRN will help with class and when getting a GN job after pinning! Good luck and study hard!(If u have a life than you are not studying enough!) stdnrsrck:
