Hillsborough Community College Fall 2010

Published

hello! i just joined this lovely and informative site after lurking for a few weeks. i'm planning to apply for the program after this fall semester. (need to finish a&pII and college algebra).

who else?! :)

edit: can someone walk me through the application process? i know it's pretty easy, but i like knowing 100%! i'm not sure if an adviser would help me much. i know you need high school transcripts, an hcc application and a nursing application. then you just gather all the papers (including money?) in like a.... manila envelope and mail away? or can you electronically send your high school transcripts to them? thank you.

Hi everyone......Not sure when you all start this week but want to wish you all the best! Also, regarding the clinical calculations exam and calculators- Our instructor let us use BASIC calculators. Nothing fancy. I would not assume that all instructors allow this. It would be much safer to clarify with your individual instructors.

Willbegrad11...Thanks, once again! We will clarify TOMORROW, when we have our first day of clinicals. You have been awesome, and you will obviously make an incredible :nurse: !!!

yep,... thanks so much for all your help! Squeen told me that her instructor will not let them use a calculator but it is a multiple choice exam so that helps to some extent. good luck to all getting a great nights rest, we are going to need it. See you in the morning God's willing.

Guys, our first clinical is over. It was so awesome and inspiring! For the other group -don't stress out and enjoy!

Elga,

Thanks for sharing...can you elaborate with any details? Did you stay for the whole time (6:30am-4:30pm)?

Did you have to demonstrate any skills? I can't remember if your group was assigned any reading/skill studying ahead of time?

Any details would be great, because I am still stressing, and planned on studying for several more hours tonight in hopes to truly be prepared. I know every instructor is different, but please do tell... :)

Nickdost, make sure you are on time. It started exactly at 6.30. We finished at 3.15

We were divided in 3 groups and did 3 stations (hand washing, making unoccupied/occupied bed, bathing). All the skills were explained to us, but the instructor expected us to know some of it and asked questions.

It was FUN!!! All instructors are very passionate about their work. I did not notice how 10 hours flew by. Before I was worried how I am going to survive through such a long clinical on my feet. I did not even notice.

We learned, we laughed. It was emotional and very comfortable. Some people are anxious about peri-care and other staff, like guys washing females and vice versa.

Try to read as much as you can. Because we were given assignment for the next week. It is 4 or 5 chapters (vital signs, wound care, etc). Those are big chapters. I had a feeling many people in our group have not started reading PerryPotter yet as our assignment for today was not as specific as yours. Our assignment is for the whole week. So people still have time to work on the chapters for this week. The same staff that you were assigned except for urinal, bowel, ch.40.

All the instructors are adorable and it is a big help. I am no longer anxious of clinicals in the hospital. However, our instructor said we will have to work a lot and bathe "the entire floor" of patients to get experience :)

None of people in our group works in a hospital. Nobody has CNA skills.

Thank you Tebyrd!!!! I'm excited... I have ALOT riding on this school! I'm sitting with a 3.714 just waiting to submit all of my info... My fingers will be crossed from now until the moment i receive a letter early march.

Elga...thanks SO much! Ironically, I fell asleep when I went to put my little ones down for bed and did not end up studying any more. That's a good thing...because I felt like I was pretty well prepared...EXCEPT for the TEST!!! We had a (QUITE lengthy) computerized Kaplan test. It doesn't count for any part of our grade, but they are considering using it as part of the admissions process for future classes. There were sections in Reading, Writing, Math and Science, with NCLEX style questions. ANyway...all in all it was a good first day! Thanks for sharing everything from YOUR first day...talk to you soon!

Shamani, 3.714? You got this one in the bag. Trust me on that :)

I believe Spring is less competitive than Fall and, if I'm not mistaken, the floor for Fall was like 3.41 or something. At any rate, consider yourself accepted and enjoy the next few months!!!

We get to use calculators (only basic and they're provided by our instructor). Ladies can I get more details on clinical? Did your sneakers literally have to be all white? How much did you need to retain from the assigned P&P reading? How are you feeling about doing clinicals in the hospitals now (any less nervous at all...please say yes 'cause I'm absolutley petrified)? Do we need a stopwatch or am I pulling that out of the air? Details people, lol.

Tebyrd,

I forgot that you don't have your clinicals until Saturday...

Relax, it is FUN!! The instructors were more laid back than I imagined possible, and VERY inspirational! We practiced the hand-washing, bed-making, bathing, bed pans, and urinal skills. No one was EVER singled out, for ANY reason. We had a good time...except for the Kaplan test at the end of the day!

It depends on the instructor, but I have Nike Shox, which DO have some silver on them (around the "shox" area) and a little bit at the toe, and she is FINE with them. As long as there was not too much color, and as long as they didn't have any mesh/holes, etc..and were leather or leather-like, she was okay with them. Just BE SURE they are comfortable, because even though it wasn't a full ten hours on our feet, there were SOME people that were hurting by the end of the day. BTW...we were never lined up and inspected, etc...and no one was called out about ANYTHING!

We never discussed any P&P content (except for the skills), until our lecture today. After receiving the schedule, it is CLEAR that the pace is QUICK and the amount of information is HUGE...but I know that by taking one week at a time, we will be FINE! Hope this helps...and remember to breathe! :)

Oh, Tebyrd...

Not a stopwatch, but a watch with a second hand (for taking vitals).
