Hillsborough Community College Fall 2010

Published

hello! i just joined this lovely and informative site after lurking for a few weeks. i'm planning to apply for the program after this fall semester. (need to finish a&pII and college algebra).

who else?! :)

edit: can someone walk me through the application process? i know it's pretty easy, but i like knowing 100%! i'm not sure if an adviser would help me much. i know you need high school transcripts, an hcc application and a nursing application. then you just gather all the papers (including money?) in like a.... manila envelope and mail away? or can you electronically send your high school transcripts to them? thank you.

Survived first week of NP1! Does anyone else feel as stressed and overwhelmed as I do?

You're so awesome Nick :). Thank you! Seriously. I'm a tad bit calmer now, lol. Following your advice I'll be purchasing nike shox tomorrow! Thanks to everyone. Gonna go read these one million pages now. So tired. Thia is gonna be rough. Eh will it'll make us stronger.

I feel tired. I don't know how it is physically possible to read all this and do the other extra staff recommended (study guide, NCLEX review, etc). But, above all, I feel happy. That's a real challenge. Nothing compared to pre-reqs.

Hi!! Congrats to all you new nursing students!! I am a Spring '11 applicant, and was wondering, since the Fall '10 program has started...if you can tell me what your schedule is like! I heard that on top of the clinicals and lectures, you also have community hours, computer hours, lab hours, etc, and I'm a bit concerned with all the extra hours (since I have children)! Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Hopefulin10,

I am only 3 days into the program, but I will definitely give you feedback on this as time goes on. I have two children, ages 6 and 8, with basically NO help, and no family here, either. I already know that this is going to be a HUGE challenge, but I am determined to make it work. So far, my biggest chunks of study time take place at night after they are in bed. It is all about self-discipline, managing your time, and wanting it badly enough to find a way to make it happen. Good luck, and I will check back with you in a few weeks. : )

Tebyrd,

Thank you...

and don't feel obligated on the Nike Shox...everyone's feet are different. I would encourage you to try them on, but some others have not liked the way they fit their particular feet. There are HUGE threads on here about shoes, and everyone has their own "favorite" brand. A few of the most popular...Dansko, New Balance, Dove, Klogs, and the new Skechers WORK Shape ups.

Good luck, and happy reading (AND shoe shopping)!

P.S. I've heard that the Uniform City on Kennedy has a good selection of popular "nursing shoes".

Thanks! I would appreciate any insight on what to expect! When someone told me there was MUCH MORE involved than just the lectures/clinicals/studying, that's when I got worried. How many days are actually consumed by everything (not counting study time)? Can you give me any info on the extra hours, such as lab hours, computer hours, community hours, etc?

Again, thanks so much for your reply! I REALLY appreciate it!

It's not much. 10 lab hours (you can schedule them yourself), 5 computer lab hours. 1 community project, like participation in a Breast Cancer Walk (2-3 hours). That's about it.

Oh ok, thanks! Is that per semester, or per week?

Hope,

I attend the PC Campus and am in the nights/weekend program. We've got to do 10 nursing lab hours on one of the campuses (to practice skills) prior to going to in-hospital clinicals. This is outside of our lecture (T & W 5-8pm) and clinical days (S 6:30am-5:30pm). We also have to do computer hours but these aren't required to be done on campus, they can be done at home. We also have to do a community service project whereby we're required to attend/assist with a health-related event (could be a walk or something along those lines). This is particularly challenging if you're doing the night and weekend program, which in my case I chose because I work in the daytime M-F. Our Saturdays are taken up by clinicals. So no clue when I'm going to find time to do these things. But hey, if there's a will there's a way (I hope!).
