Hillsborough Community College Fall 2010

Published

hello! i just joined this lovely and informative site after lurking for a few weeks. i'm planning to apply for the program after this fall semester. (need to finish a&pII and college algebra).

who else?! :)

edit: can someone walk me through the application process? i know it's pretty easy, but i like knowing 100%! i'm not sure if an adviser would help me much. i know you need high school transcripts, an hcc application and a nursing application. then you just gather all the papers (including money?) in like a.... manila envelope and mail away? or can you electronically send your high school transcripts to them? thank you.

Thanks nickdost!!! Any idea of how much those care packages might be? And I just saw a couple pages back that you already posted about the Amazon Prime membership lol whoops, I feel silly!

tebyrd, I just ordered 2 white scrub pants from allheart.com because all the uniform stores I went to didn't have the kind I wanted in my size. I did try them on at the store 1 size bigger so I am crossing my fingers the sizes will fit when I get them! I ordered them online today lol, so I am quite behind too. But really we still have a lot of time before we even wear them! Nickdost I believe ordered from there, so maybe she can answer about shipping? :) And my tops I just bought from uniform city.

It took about 5 working days to get my order from allheart, so you should have plenty of time.

Guys...I just got a slap of reality when I read a new announcement from our (DM morning) instructor!!!!! For those whom haven't read it...it is posted as an announcement just like the info. about the books. It details EXACTLY what clinical skills we should know BY THE FIRST DAY OF CLINICALS (8/25)...as well as all the reading that we need to do before our first class!!!!:eek::eek::eek::eek: Deep breath....I'm sure we will be just fine!!

Oh...and she is asking for our first and second choices for clinical assignments... The sites are St. Joseph's, Town & Country, and UCH-Carrollwood. So I would e-mail your choices ASAP, as it sounds as if she will assign them on a first come first served basis.

This is finally REAL to me...how about you guys??

You're scaring me nickdost! Is it a lot? Are the book packages even available in bookstores yet? I haven't even started on the clinical calculations that I had planned on being done by now! :(

Andddd as for the health forms-- on the paper it says history of the varicella disease is not sufficient, but then other people I've talked to said that they didn't get titers done bc they said it's fine if they had it already?? I am confused as what to turn in. I already got titers done but the doctor just put "had disease" on the form and didn't put the titer result even though I got it done......? So I guess I'm just going to turn in all my lab work papers and we'll see..

I don't mean to scare you, but it IS ALOT! Have you read the message yet? If you need me to post it here, I will. Just let me know.

As far as the titers go...I had them done and the doc provided a copy of the actual result to include with the health form.

I called the bookstore and NO...still no books available...NOR the care plan packets. They mentioned the fact (excuse) that they are renovating...frustrating!

I am scared like hell. It's not the same as taking pre-requisites. Tests are going to be harder because they are NCLEX format. All 4 answers are right, but you have to choose one that fits best. That freaks me out. However, I hope it is doable and manageable. We'll see.... Only 2 weeks left.

Hey Nickdost,

What did your teacher post?

Ours posted the following:

Hello class-

I am eager to meet you all and begin the journey to your nursing success. Your clinical day is Tuesdays throughout the semester. Your clinical sites are University Community Hospital (Carrolwood), Town and Country Hospital, and St. Joseph's Hospital. Look for Baycare orientation to be posted in shared files soon. This will need to be completed prior to entering the hospital for your clinical experience. The first few weeks (weeks 1-3) we will be in the Nursing Lab on the Dale Mabry campus. Please come dressed in your HCC uniform for the lab days. The patch should be placed on the left arm and you will need to purchase your own stethoscope. I understand money is tight right now for many, and the textbook purchase is quite substantial, but I do recommend a Littmann stethoscope. Other stethoscopes will work fine- and this is optional. The Littmann stethoscope has proven to make sounds a bit more audible which may prove to be beneficial as you are learning about the sounds.

Clinical preferences will be taken into consideration. There is no guarantee, however, that your request can be granted. I will do my best to accommodate you. Please rank your preferences from 1-3 and send them back to me. I will be distributing the clinical list on our first clinical day.

Your clinical calculations book (chapters 1-8) should be reviewed. Focus on apothecary and household measurements. I also write everything in military time as this best prepares you for life in the hospital. If you are unfamiliar, you may want to review this as well. You will not need to know any section on body surface area in your clinical calculations book. It will be important to review the clinical calculations on your own as this content is briefly covered in class. Essentially, this area is self study. Do not hesitate to contact me if you are having difficulty with the content. I will be placing info in the shared files regularly to assist you with reference material- look for this in the future.

I know you may have many more questions and I want you to know I believe communication is the hallmark of great relationships.

I will begin to post all information on shared files and in announcement form.

Looking forward to your success!

The MATH test (Clinical Calculations) will be in week THREE!! That's the one that we have to pass (within two attempts)...or we fail for the semester!! Yikes! I am supposed to have a last minute vacation...don't know how I will be able to relax!!??:redbeathe

Okay...so now that I have freaked out/vented a little... I honestly know that it WILL be okay. We just have to use our time wisely from here on out. :nurse: Remember the prize...

Elga...here you go!

I look forward to working with you this semester!

Thanks Nickdost!

This info helped me a lot. I started reading Perry&Potter, but I guess I read the chapters (Vital Signs, Medication Administration) that we don't need at the moment.

Now I am confused because our teacher told us to concentrate on apothecary and household measurements. And yours just told you to learn that 1 grain=60 mg. It seems like we will have different tests.

Elga...I noticed that, too, about the apothecary system! Interesting... I read the wrong Chapters in P&P, also...but it wasn't a waste of time. We WILL cover those at some point, and we will be ahead of the game when we do, right? :)

I am so relieved that I am not the only one freaking/stressing out after yesterday's news! It took me all day to become "rational" again. I know we can all do this or we wouldn't be here, but right now it seems daunting. Two years from now, we'll all be wondering why we were so nervous. Happy reading!:uhoh3:
