Hillsborough Community College Fall 2010

Published

hello! i just joined this lovely and informative site after lurking for a few weeks. i'm planning to apply for the program after this fall semester. (need to finish a&pII and college algebra).

who else?! :)

edit: can someone walk me through the application process? i know it's pretty easy, but i like knowing 100%! i'm not sure if an adviser would help me much. i know you need high school transcripts, an hcc application and a nursing application. then you just gather all the papers (including money?) in like a.... manila envelope and mail away? or can you electronically send your high school transcripts to them? thank you.

Thanks so much. Did you use her? If so how was she and what did it cost.

I liked her. I don't remember the exact cost 'cause I paid for vaccinations too. But I remember it was reasonable.

Hello again!

For all of you DM Morning Classmates...I stumbled upon a list of books from our instructor. Go to HCC Hawknet and click on your FALL 2010 class schedule. The nursing class/section comes up and below it you can click on two documents. One is the list of books (required and supplemental). The other is some VERY vague info. on the bundle that will be available to us ("sometime in August", per the bookstore). No pricing information is available yet. I researched last night and purchased my books through Amazon.com. I compared prices at 5 different textbook sites and they were still cheapest. (FREE 2-day shipping if you are a PRIME member, NO TAX, and overall best prices to begin with.) NOTE: I didn't wait to see what the bookstore bundle price is because I had already purchased 2 of the 6 books offered in the bundle, and frankly...I want the books NOW!!! :)

I STILL don't "show up" as a student in the HCC system, so I STILL cannot get my ID. They are saying that it will probably be the first week of classes before I will be able to get one... FUNNY how I took THREE of my pre-reqs there VERY recently...AND I sure was able to PAY for CLASSES for Fall...huh?

Hope all is well with you guys!!

I'm pretty confused about the textbook e-mail that was sent out....in the package are they just textbooks or textbooks + the electronic books? If so, are we paying more/extra for the e-books? Because I think I could do without the ebooks...and might as well buy all the textbooks separately online if it is cheaper. Ahhh.

Ceedee,

My interpretation is that the bundle includes SIX of the hard copy textbooks (the ones on the list with asterisks) AND the e-books. It says the e-Books are discounted by 80% if you buy the bundle. I am not interested in the e-books, so I just went ahead and got the texts that I was missing, online. Before I did that, I called the bookstore to find out what the price of the bundle is going to be and they couldn't even give me an estimate (OR a projected arrival time)! My guess is that the e-books WILL be discounted but the textbook prices will be inflated, but that is just a guess. It is difficult to want to give the bookstore my business when they are so LATE making the books, student I.D.'s, and ANY helpful information available.

Hello, can someone please tell me how many people actually get above an 80% on the theory tests. I'm thinking about transfering there from a different school in Florida that only had a 75% average requirement. Does that mean the tests at Hillsborough Community College are easier than my last school? I remember half of my class barely getting above a 75% average in order to keep progressing in the program.

I have seen other schools with only a 70% average needed. Why would I go to a school that's got the bar set so high when I could go to a school with a lower theory test, required average. We all know the Theory test are extremely hard. thanks!

LazyNurse... I don't want to offend you, but WOULD like to ask you a question: If you are looking for the "easiest" nursing program around, won't that make you the most poorly trained? Quite honestly, based upon that outlook (AND your screen name) I don't think I would want ANYONE'S life in your hands. Do you think that you should perhaps consider a change in majors? Once again, I don't mean to offend...just hope that you take a hard look at what direction you should be taking. Best of luck...

For the members of the Dale Mabry morning class and anyone who has completed their first semester:

I am wondering if we need to order all of the supplemental materials, too. I am ordering the required materials, but am hesitant to order all of the supplemental materials in case we don't REALLY need them. I don't want to spend any more money than I have to.

Hi Persgirl... I have heard that even if we WANT to purchase the supplemental texts, we will NEVER have time to use them. I am waiting to double check with our instructor about this...but would love to get confirmation from others that are currently in the program!! Take care, and see you soon!!:)

Persgirl,

I am not sure what books are listed as supplemental & required for you, however, for us there were some books listed as supplemental that we had to have. Wee needed the Nursing Diagnosis Book and Davis Drug Guide even though they are listed as supplemental. If the Fundamentals of Success is on your list I highly recommended it. Also, Saunders NCLEX Review was so helpful for my success in NP1. If I think of anything else I will let you know.

My friend who is 1 year ahead of us at HCC Nursing told me the same--Doenges Drug Guide, Nursing Diagnosis, NCLEX review and HESI review from the supplemental reading. She actually carried Nursing Diagnosis and Drug Guide to clinicals. She said she did not use RN notes, etc.

Thanks to everyone who responded to my question regarding the supplemental material. I've ordered the materials you suggested.
