Hillsborough Community College Fall 2010

Published

hello! i just joined this lovely and informative site after lurking for a few weeks. i'm planning to apply for the program after this fall semester. (need to finish a&pII and college algebra).

who else?! :)

edit: can someone walk me through the application process? i know it's pretty easy, but i like knowing 100%! i'm not sure if an adviser would help me much. i know you need high school transcripts, an hcc application and a nursing application. then you just gather all the papers (including money?) in like a.... manila envelope and mail away? or can you electronically send your high school transcripts to them? thank you.

I am so afraid I'm going to forget something (why do I lead such a frazzled existance :(?). Can someone give a breakdown of the things that need to be or critique my breadown?

1. CPR Class

2. Physical/Health Form Completion

3. Purchase Scrubs, Pen Light, Stethoscope, White Leather Sneakers

4. Have stitch sewn onto scrubs (stitch to be purchased from bookstore).

5. Get Name Badge from third party company.

6. Get Name Bade from HCC.

7. Purchase book bundle when list is finalized.

8. Pay for classes.

Anything else?

Tebyrd,

Don't forget the bandage scissors - we need to have those. Other than that, I think you have everything covered. I was able to get my i.d. from HCC, too, with no problems.

Hope you feel better.:)

Oh snap! Bandage Scissors? Okay, where do I get those from? The Uniform Store again from the mall? And Skechers Shape-Up Shoes? Hmmm...those sound like a winner. I"m so nervous. And frazzled. I need to go sit down and meditate or something.

Tebyrd,

You can get the bandage scissors at the uniform store - I even saw them at HCC's bookstore. I think they were around $5.00.

Does anyone know where we can buy a name badge holder? I am just wondering how we are supposed to wear our HCC i.d..

Also, for anyone in the program already, does the instructor tell you about all the little "extras" (notebook, calculator, etc) you might need for clinicals?

it's official...i dropped off my application today. i didn't really feel too good about dropping my application into a drop box...but i guess it is better than trusting the mail?? now...the wait begins.

i am praying that my "c" in sociology from twenty years ago doesn't keep me out of this program!! (who knows why i got a c??? i don't even remember!!) i also took pass/fail freshman english (that's the only way it was offered at the time)...which definitely does not help matters. here is why, for any others out there that took it that way:

your gpa for the hcc nursing program is calculated by your grades in the following 21 credit hours:

freshmen english 3 credits

sociology 3 credits

college algebra 3 credits

a & p i 3 credits

a & p i lab 1 credit

a & p ii 3 credits

a & p ii lab 1 credit

micro 3 credits

micro lab 1 credit

if you took freshmen english as a pass/fail course, hcc (instead of substituting a higher level english class) reduces the number of credits for your gpa calculation, to 18 credits.

for me...that means that my one "c" in sociology carries alot more weight!

just thought i would mention it for any others wondering about the pass/fail credit situation.

good luck to you all!

tebyrd...did you submit your application yesterday as planned?

hope so!

me too! i took sociology in 1995 and i could've sworn i got an a in that class, but when i went to look at my old grades it reads "c"! so now my gpa is down as well. hmmmm....

I just read the ENTIRE thread. Wow! I feel like I've been reading a novel. So happy for you all! I'm taking Algebra and English 2 this fall semester and will apply as soon as my grades are posted in December, while you are starting your first nursing semester. I can't wait til my time comes. And as you see from my previous post I dont think im worried about that C in sociology anymore. Thanks for making this thread.:)

Hello all, hope your summer's are going great & getting your to-do lists checked off! I'm feeling the stress big time. :uhoh3:

Hey Guys! I hope you are enjoying summer vacation. I wish you guys all the luck for next semester. One tip I have is to purchase Fluids & Electrolytes made easy because this was a tough subject for the whole class. As for shoes, I bought the Skechers Shape-Up shoes. I was hesitant about buying them because they are $100 but they were recommended by our clinical instructor and several nurses at the hospital. They are worth every penny you spend. I felt like I was walking on pillows and my feet didn't hurt @ the end of the day. Also, I highly recommend support hose. I know it sounds crazy but they really help.

I tried on a pair of Shape-Ups recently and they were SO comfortable. I'm thinking of buying them soon since there is a sale going on :D You bought the work/non-slip ones correct? Did you order them online? Because the 2-3 stores I browsed in didn't have the 'work' kind.

Hi! I just bought Shape-Ups Work today and I just love them. They are so comfortable! Don't confuse them with Shape-up Walk though. I tried both of them on. The Walk version is a complete different thing.

I paid 114 bucks in the Rack Room Shoes / Brandon Mall. Only the Walk version is on sale. But they have a deal "Get the 2nd pair half-price". So I still saved some money on a pair of sandals that I also bought there.

Look into MBT's...Walking Company sells them. Podiatrists actually send patients in to get these shoe's for foot, leg, and back problems. They can be pricey if not on sale, but SKETCHERS COPIED THEM with their Shape-Ups. I promise!

Studenthope, congratulations in advance. I was in your exact same position this time last year and found it fascinating to read the other threads and to be able to conceptulaize the process that the applicants went through. These threads are wonderful source of support and I would definitely encourage you to start one for your group/cohort. Good luck to you :).

Wow you guys are on top of things.

As for the bandage scissors several people bought them @ the bookstore and weren't happy with them.

You can get the badge holder in the bookstore also.

Instructors don't tell you a whole lot of what you will need. I was lucky my instructor provided us with a folder of everything we needed for clinicals so I took that with me. Some students used clipboards, some used notebooks. Always bring index cards to make drug cards. You will always want to bring your Davis Drug Guide with you also. If I think of anything else I will let you know but it sounds like you guys have everything under control.
