Hillsborough Community College Fall 2010

Published

hello! i just joined this lovely and informative site after lurking for a few weeks. i'm planning to apply for the program after this fall semester. (need to finish a&pII and college algebra).

who else?! :)

edit: can someone walk me through the application process? i know it's pretty easy, but i like knowing 100%! i'm not sure if an adviser would help me much. i know you need high school transcripts, an hcc application and a nursing application. then you just gather all the papers (including money?) in like a.... manila envelope and mail away? or can you electronically send your high school transcripts to them? thank you.

Hello all,

I visited HCC today and found out a couple of tidbits of information that I thought I should pass along.

1: You can now pay tuition...the amount ends up being $1103.20 for the semester!

2: If you don't already have a student ID card with a picture (which we must have to wear for clinicals) you will not be able to get one until "some time in August". HCC has "changed the system"...so if you haven't taken a class there over the summer, it won't recognize you as a student. (Even IF you are registered for the Nursing Program for fall semester).

3: If you are planning on hand delivering your Health Form, copy of CPR card, etc...Sandrowitz's off is is DTECH Room 337. (There is a directory that lists it as 324, and from what I found, there IS no Rm. 324!!) Also...it is in a series of offices thru an unmarked door all the way at the end of the hall.

Hope this helps...and hope you all are enjoying your summer!! :)

I would love to hear any opinions/suggestions on clipboards, stethoscopes, etc... Do you guys carry a clipboard for clinicals? With or without a calculator? What brand stethoscope do you suggest? Did you have it engraved?

I purchased a Littman lightweight II SE. It has worked great. It isn't the top of the line of the Littmans, but I hear great heart and lung sounds on it, and it isn't heavy like some other stethoscopes. I got it through Amazon. They are down to $44.96. There may be a better/newer model out now, not sure. I did not have it engraved.

I never carried a clipboard in clincals personally; however, a few students did. I also never had a calculator on the floor. I usually only carried: small spiral notebook (one of those really tiny ones), 2 pens, pencil, bandage scissors, wound measurement srip (given to us in the skils lab the first week of class), and then I would stock up on alcohol pads, "remove" bandage remover pads, and tape from the floor. I also would carry the patient summary given to us on our patient at the beginning of the shift (1-2 page printout). Oh, I also got a black sharpie on a keyring and attached it to my badge holder, to label dressings when they were done. I would also bring my drug guide and stash it somewhere on the floor or in the chart rack to look up meds.

Also...any current Dale Mabry morning program people: Do you have clinicals on Wednesday, then classs on Thurs. and Fri?? That is what they have planned for us, and I wonder how hard it is to be in clinical ALL DAY Wed., then have to be ready for class the next morning. Obviously it would just mean that you have to prepare farther in advance, but just wanted to get a feel for how difficult that is...

I did have clinicals on Wednesday for NP1 and honesty, it wasn't bad at all. I would start my reading 1 week ahead. I would read after class on Thursday and Friday for the following week's lecture. I was never behind that way and I would not have to do any reading/studying the night of clinicals. The first few clinical days were physically rough if you have never worked on the floor and on your feet all day, but it is not bad at all. I actually liked getting my clinical day "over with" so I could focus on class for the rest of the week. :)

Hope this helps!! It is great you are asking questions now because it can be overwhelming those first few weeks. Good luck and I am happy to give any advice and answer any questions you may have. :nurse:

2011 Nurse,

Thank you...awesome information, as usual! You rock!

:)

HI Nick and the rest of my classmates. I did see that the amount due for the semester is just over 1100 but i also have another amount of like 2500 and 1500 showing...can someone please tell me what those are? I am so confused right now...please help. also, did anyone else try to get the funds from Tampa Bay work force alliance?? they are telling me that the program is on hold....did anyone actually get funds from them?:uhoh3:

Hi kmangirl!

NO idea what those other two amounts are... I paid the $1100 amount and received a statement that said paid in full. I also know nothing about the "Workforce Alliance" stuff. Sorry to be of no help...hope you are enjoying your summer!! :)

Kman,

I only got charged for the $1100. Have you been to HCC before? Maybe they are previous balances? If not, I'd call the registrar's office or the cashier's office.

Has anyone gotten their books yet? I'm debating on whether or not to buy the package and in the meantime purchase some older editions just to get started. Any ideas?

I bought my scrubs, stethescope, scissors, penlight and name tag, but not the shoes. Has anyone found a really good pair of shoes they'd recommend? I tried a few on at the uniform store, but got the feeling my feet would be killing me by the end of the day.

I can't believe we are getting so close to starting! I keep trying to enjoy the time we have left, but have already started worrying about how the semester will go. I hope I am not the only one feeling this way.

Thanks guys....I figured it out no thanks to the people who answer the phone at hcc. The number that I saw is the total fees that I have.paid to hcc. Thanks for all your help. I am very nervous too about what school will be like....I think it is fair to say we all are. However; we made it this far........we will be great. I tried on a pair of shoes at the uniform store in university mall.....they were NOT CUTE! but felt great.....they were the dove brand and cost 60 bucks.

So...did you buy them??...I got Nike Shox, which seem VERY comfortable, but were $85 on sale...and they are very sporty/cute, but I don't think any of us will know what works for us until we have been on our feet for 10-12 hours at a time in them...

Glad you found out what those other amounts were all about! : )

I have recently come to realize that MOST of the things that I am stressing about are actually NOT as big of a deal as I am making them out to be...

Hang in there, and remember to breathe..we WILL get through this...in fact, we are gonna ROCK!!:nurse:

Nickdost,

I love your positive energy! You are absolutely right - we will ROCK!! :yeah::up:

Kman,

Glad you were able to figure out your payment information. I saw the Doves, but they didn't have my size in the one I liked. I've heard they're very comfortable shoes and the sales associate told me to check back because they are always getting new ones in. I am also going to look into some sneakers, too.

Thank you both for the information.:)

Thanks, Persgirl! :)

Kman...I bought several of the books a few months ago.(YES...I bought them before I was even sure that I was IN!!) I have an NCLEX study book, Potter & Perry, Clinical Calculations (which WAS for sale in the bookstore during orientation), Nurses Pocket Guide, and a couple of others that I wanted on my own.

Everyone will have their own opinion on this, but for ME, I want to try to get ahead as much as possible so that I can minimize the impact on my children. That's why I went ahead and bought them early...and if I decide to get the bundle later, I will try to sell the duplicates at that time... I think you are FINE to get the earlier editions.

I ordered my stethoscope and it is being engraved...patches are being sewn on...OH, and we can't get our photo ID's until some time in August (per the people at the bookstore). So...that is the only thing I am waiting on. I just wanted to get everything DONE so that I can focus on enjoying the rest of the summer!!

For those of you that have not yet bought/ordered a stethoscope or other gear... There is an online coupon for www.allheart.com that works (even on Littmann brand stethoscopes...which is VERY unusual) It gives you $10 off of whatever you order! The code is NSNATN9. (Disregard the comment on the site about having to be a member of the NSNA...the coupon works, regardless). They carry those Dove shoes you are interested in, too, Kman!

Hope this helps and have a great day!

Hey Guys! I hope you are enjoying summer vacation. I wish you guys all the luck for next semester. One tip I have is to purchase Fluids & Electrolytes made easy because this was a tough subject for the whole class. As for shoes, I bought the Skechers Shape-Up shoes. I was hesitant about buying them because they are $100 but they were recommended by our clinical instructor and several nurses at the hospital. They are worth every penny you spend. I felt like I was walking on pillows and my feet didn't hurt @ the end of the day. Also, I highly recommend support hose. I know it sounds crazy but they really help.

Hey everyone. Just an FYI, I actually went to the bookstore randomly last week (I've been sick so I was off from work. Should have been resting but...who can sit down when you've got so much to do?). Anywho, I was able to get my ID badge. The system theoretically shouldn't have recognized me according to the folks in the bookstore but it did anyway and I got my badge with no problems (free of charge). It may be worth a try if you have to go up there for another reason.
