Hillsborough Community College Fall 2010

U.S.A. Florida

Published

hello! i just joined this lovely and informative site after lurking for a few weeks. i'm planning to apply for the program after this fall semester. (need to finish a&pII and college algebra).

who else?! :)

edit: can someone walk me through the application process? i know it's pretty easy, but i like knowing 100%! i'm not sure if an adviser would help me much. i know you need high school transcripts, an hcc application and a nursing application. then you just gather all the papers (including money?) in like a.... manila envelope and mail away? or can you electronically send your high school transcripts to them? thank you.

I'm applying for Fall 2010 (night and weekend Plant City)!!

I would much rather go to school at night as well....with a part-time on the side of course.

It's OFFICIAL...I dropped off my application today. I didn't really feel too good about dropping my application into a DROP BOX...but I guess it is better than trusting the mail?? Now...the wait begins.

I am praying that my "C" in Sociology from TWENTY YEARS AGO doesn't keep me out of this program!! (WHO KNOWS why I got a C??? I don't even remember!!) I also took Pass/Fail Freshman English (that's the only way it was offered at the time)...which DEFINITELY DOES NOT help matters. Here is why, for any others out there that took it that way:

Your GPA for the HCC Nursing Program is calculated by your grades in the following 21 credit hours:

Freshmen English 3 credits

Sociology 3 credits

College Algebra 3 credits

A & P I 3 credits

A & P I LAB 1 credit

A & P II 3 credits

A & P II LAB 1 credit

Micro 3 credits

Micro LAB 1 credit

IF you took Freshmen English as a PASS/FAIL course, HCC (instead of substituting a HIGHER LEVEL ENGLISH CLASS) reduces the number of credits for your GPA calculation, to 18 credits.

For me...that means that my one "C" in Sociology carries alot more weight!

Just thought I would mention it for any others wondering about the Pass/Fail credit situation.

Good luck to you all!

Tebyrd...did you submit your application yesterday as planned?

Hope so!

You could have taken a Sociology course online during the summer, bussing it out in about a month. That "C" may not hurt you depending on the sciences, but I think you made the wrong decision and should have retaken the course. Social Science courses are easy.

Violet0069, if you don't mind me asking-what was your GPA? I"m trying not to scare myself but will have between a 3.5 and a 3.61 when I apply. Not sure if I should feel comfortable and confident or scared :(

Also, I plan to do nights and weekends at Plant City starting in the Fall. Is the program truly that horrific, like have you walked away feeling like you didn't learn much because of the school's lack of resources? What hospitals did you do your clinicals at?

I heard nursing school basically prepares you to take the N-CLEX. You gain your knowledge and true nursing skills by actually working. I have several RNs in my family and they all say working as a nurse is almost nothing like they teach in nursing school.

Tebyrd, I hope you get this in time...they are NOT open tomorrow. They don't re-open until Monday, the 4th. Check it out on the Hawknet main page.

Take care!

It's nice to see how all of us can come together to help each other out as fellow nurses and prospective nurses. I hope it's this welcoming in my workplace.

Stacio...

There is no grade forgiveness in the state of Florida unless you FAIL a class. My first thought, obviously would have been to re-take the class but it was not an option because I received a grade of C and could NOT re-take it.

Uhh..there is no grade forgiveness in the state of Florida unless you FAIL a class.. or I would have GLADLY re-taken it. And you know what...I took that "easy" Social Science class 20 years ago...NO IDEA why I got a C. BUT...it is with me to stay, I guess. I otherwise would have a 4.0 so it really stinks.

I'm not sure I understand the grade forgiveness conversation- my adviser at HCC said it would work to take my math over to improve my grade from 10 yrs ago.

Hi Lactnet,

To clarify, on the grade forgiveness subject... You must FAIL a class in order to have the ability to RE-take it and receive grade forgiveness. The NEW grade then replaces the FAILING grade. In MY case, I received a grade of "C", so I am NOT able to re-take it. In other words...I would have been better off if I had FAILED it! This policy varies from state to state...but this is Florida's policy. Hope this clarifies it...

Aren't you already IN the HCC Nursing Program?? It may sound strange, but I recognize your screen name from some other threads, I think.

Hey Nick! I dropped mine off Monday and didn't exactly feel warm and tingly when I put it in that crowded drop box but I suppose it could be worse. I've had postal service nightmares! But at any rate it sounds like you've done extremely well outside of that C in sociology. By my (slightly obsessive) reading of the other threads I would think that having at last a 3.4 would be what you needed to get accepted. You're in there like swimwear, don't fret :)

As for the comment regarding nursing school not really being helpful, those two years worth of clinicals have got to count for something, right? I just can't believe that combining theory and practice do absolutely nothing for you in the clinical setting. With any job or career there's always a learning curve and a level of on the job training and I wouldn't expect nursing to be any exception. Particularly for those looking to eventually specialize it's not likely that you'll learn those specialty skills in school but at least you'll have a basis for appropriate nursing. Just my two cents.

Tebyrd...I hear you about the drop box. I waited in line at Admissions to see if I could hand it to a human being (AND to correct a problem with one of my transcripts), but they wouldn't take it face to face. I wanted a written "receipt"...after all, this is our lives we are talking about here!! I have "all of my eggs in one basket" right now, and HCC is IT!

I have also spent MUCH time on the HCC threads...there is ALOT of great information! I hope you are right about me being "in there like swimwear"... I WANT to NOT stress about it, but with talk of lost paperwork, and miscalculated GPA's...it is difficult. IF I have calculated properly (and I've calculated it SEVERAL times...I am going in with a 3.67. I have all A's in the pre-reqs, and then my mysterious C!! BUT...you NEVER know how many others are applying! If you feel comfortable posting your GPA, I would love to hear about it.

As far as that comment from Stacio about nursing school not preparing us...I am trying to be as positive as possible...that's why I didn't reply to that one. But since you bring it up... NO training ever FULLY prepares a person to do a job. EXPERIENCE is huge...but you MUST have a base knowledge...that's why they REQUIRE everyone to go through nursing school and pass the NCLEX... The medical field is one where we will NEVER know ALL that there is to know. Every day will be a learning experience...but we have to start with this little thing called NURSING SCHOOL...and that is why we are all here!! :nurse:

Good vibes being sent your way...I wish you were applying for the DM DAY program!!!!

Take care, and hope to talk to you again soon!

Nick,

That line was atrocious!! I'm sorry you waited to no avail. I'm nervous about the miscalculations and things myself since they will have to factor in the courses from my first degree. Talk about eggs being in one basket! I can't even talk about how devastated I would be if something went wrong. But it won't. I know it won't...it can't, right...? Lol. At any rate you're definitely in. All As and one mysterious C from ages ago in Sociology of all things? Your fine. I'm going in with a 3.57. I don't even want to discuss some of my mishaps (7 week A & P 2 class while trying to work a full daytime job and parent a toddler...yeah definitely got a low B). Not to mention my lab grades with a prof who must remain nameless thanks to the rules of this thread. A, B, C...so yeah. Here's hoping perfection isn't necessary, lol. Couldn't do the day program as much as I'd love to since I still have to work until my newfound career kicks off :)

I'm also not one for negativity particularly when it comes to something that I feel passionate about. I could go on forever but I'll stope here. Good luck to everyone!!

Tebyrd...

Where did you take the 7-week A&P II? I ask, because I took it over this past summer at the Brandon Campus (Summer B session)...and 7 weeks is an INSANE pace!! I am the mother of a 5-yr. old and a 7-yr. old who were off from school....WON'T do that again!

Anyway...it sounds like we are in similar situations and I would love to share a few other bits of helpful information with you, but I don't know how to go about sharing my REAL e-mail address.

Take care!
