Hey RN's that used to be LPN's !

Published

Hello and good morning peeps (EST), I am now a LPN! I am happier than ever, BUT I want to ask those of you who became RN's when is the best time to go back to school? How did it work out for you? I don't want to wait too long but I also want to go get some experience somewhere as an LPN. If you have any advice, it will be appreciated!

I have heard a lot of people who wait to go back to school for a while cannot pass the exam!

Thanks guys!

I took a year or two off before returning for my RN. I needed to work and during that time I gained great experience that helped me in school.

Do what is best for you your family.

Specializes in CCRN.

I went straight forward for my RN. I was actually in an ADN program that gave you a Diploma in Nursing after your first year of clinicals, which allowed us to test to become LPNs. Then we continued the second year and received our ADN. It was a great program.

Thanks for your responses ! I am looking for work as we speak. I may just take a year or two as well.

Seaofclouds, that sounds like a great program. I don't think they have those where I live that I'm aware of or I would've went that route for sure.

Specializes in Urology, HH, med/Surg.

I worked as an LPN for 13 years before deciding to do a bridge program for an ASN.

Which tests are you referring to? (Having difficulty passing, I mean) I passed NCLEX on my first attempt, if that eases your mind any.

Yes. Thank you. How different are those two exams? In your opinion?

Specializes in Urology, HH, med/Surg.

NCLEX PN vs RN? Ooo, It's been so long since that PN exam!! The only thing I really remember is I had a lot of questions about diabetes.

Really though, it seems the questions on the PN were related more to tasks & treatments, from what I remember. Stuff you actually do as an LPN. The RN...honestly, to me, had very little to do with actual nursing. Knowing what to delegate, some disease processes, priority questions, etc.

Okay. Thank you for sharing your experience.

Congrats on your official designation as a nurse. Good luck as you move forward.

Aw, Thanks [emoji3][emoji3][emoji3]

Specializes in Case mgmt., rehab, (CRRN), LTC & psych.

Within months of obtaining my LVN license, I enrolled in a community college and starting taking prerequisite courses. I worked as an LVN for a little more than four years before earning my ASN degree and RN license.

My advice is to return to school as soon as possible.

Specializes in med-surg.

I returned immediately after. I was too behind to take a break. Graduated LPN dec 2012. Soon to be graduating RN BSN Dec 2016
