I have nursed in the USA and contemplating on going again. Would love to touch basis with any Aussies who are currently working in the USA at the moment, or who has recently worked there?
Drop a line when time permits?
Would love to hear your thoughts.
Thanks Brissygal:bow:
Hey!
Thanks a lot for your quick response...
Oh, four months is a long time. I haven't even applied yet to the BON for NY state as I haven't even heard back from the CGFNS credentials review. Am I supposed to apply to the BON while applying to the CGFNS? I thought I couldn't do anything until I have had a credentials review from the CGFNS..
mmmm, so confusing:(
No, I am not going through a nursing agency at present..Just thought I'd get the beginning parts out of the way and then see what the best thing to do would be.
Did you go to Uni in Australia? Did you have to make up courses?
A lot of people seem to go through the Vermont board...is that because it is less strict than some others?
I am applying to New York because that's where my boyfriend is.
This process is absolutely intense!
Looking forward to hearing back more..
Thanks :)

Processing NY and CVS takes on average 8 months. If CGFNS haven't received everything within 6 months they then pass what they have on to NY and they will make a decision based on what they have received. If they plan is NY when do not apply for license with another state as even for endorsing you need to complete CVS so just stick with it
Would also suggest you check out the NCLEX forum under the student tab many help/hints/tips and support there
Hi Sydneysista,
Kaplan vs Saunders....I would say Saunders is great for reference but Kaplan will see you suceed - a very basic formula is taught through Kaplan that is so helpful in the exam. You are never going to know the answer to every question, but if you know how to approach the question them you will be home and hosed. I orginally sat the NCLEX with Saunders and failed, studied Kaplan with references from Saunders and passed!
Good luck
Hey to everyone in my 2nd home of Brisbane. I miss it dearly and hope you guys aren't getting too hot down there! I am an American who went to Australia on a whim about 8 years ago and got my nursing degree there. I moved back to the USA last year. I can't advise anyone on American Visas but I have been through the whole CGFNS and GA BON process as a foreign graduate. It took 6 months for CGFNS to finally get my credentials reviewed- thankfully I stayed in touch with my school's secretary so I could let her know when they wrote for more info and speed things up a little. My 3 year BN is not considered the same as a BSN but thankfully since I had a little theory and prac experience in every area they look for I didn't have to make up any hours. As far as the NCLEX, I don't think I really took enough time the first time to study for it so I am now waiting to take it again (unfortunately the GA BON makes you wait 90 days). I don't know if the 9 months away from anything clinical or the foreign education worked against me but I'm now pushing myself to study everyday without fail. I am keeping my Qld licence up to date if I ever want to go back. I wish you all good luck in traveling- everyone should be able to see the world and experience different places. Maybe I will get back to Brisbane someday.

Hey Sydneysista
How is your application going? Are you in NYC yet?
My application was refused by the BON in Vermont (after waiting for 9 months!!!!) as I did not have enough midwifery hours. I am now in the process of making up those hours. I hope everything went smoothly for you. Would love to hear how you went.
Hi Everyone..I thought i would post a reply to this thread, as I am an Aussie RN working in the USA. I am doing my first travel assignment in Alaska :-) I went through the process of sitting the NCLEX just this year. My husband is american and I do have my greencard. I must say, the process of trying to sit for the NCLEX exam was frustrating...I applied to the BON here (while I was living here) took nearly a year as i did not have enough hours in a couple of subjects, in which i had to redo! I went back home and did this through Deakin Uni. After this was all done it was smooth sailing.I work in theatres, and its quite different to how things work back home. Anyway anyone can msg me if they want to know more info. By the way, Brissygal? did you work at the Wesley or St. Andrews? I worked at the Wes, until mid may of this year! :-)
I'm having a similar issue being an Australian RN trying to work in USA. I'm missing clinical hours in maternity for CGFNS. Could you contact me if you know someone I could contact at Deakin University to get these hours? Thanks for any help :)

Hi Sydneysista
I am using Kaplan and Lippincott Williams & Wilkins. I am still waiting to hear back from the BON in Vermont and so far it has taken 4 months. I have been informed about 5 months is the waiting time but that is different for every BON. So i still have no idea if i have been approved to sit the NCLEX yet but i am studying already. You really need to put in the hard yards and study at least 3-4 months prior to sitting the exam, at least!! There is a lot to know. Are you going through a nursing agency?
