I have nursed in the USA and contemplating on going again. Would love to touch basis with any Aussies who are currently working in the USA at the moment, or who has recently worked there?

Drop a line when time permits?

Would love to hear your thoughts.

I know it doesn't make sense but that is the info i got from BON in WI. My thoughts were the same, if i pass NCLEX then surely another exam isn't going to make any difference but that is how the BON in WI works. Even though i am applying for endorsment through the State of Vermont, i still have to do the CGFNS. Basically if you haven't worked 2 out of 5 years in the US then you have to do this. I don't see how going through the New Mexico board would be any different? Thanks though for looking into it for me. :banghead::nurse:

from faq on ncsbn site:

does the nlc reduce the level of a state's licensure requirements?

no. under the nlc, states continue to have complete authority in determining licensure requirements and disciplinary actions on a nurse's license per the state's nurse practice act.

the license requirements for wi are the cgfns exam and cert.

still doesnt make sense to me..... did you happen to just ask "I have passed my NCLEX exam already from another state and wish to apply for endorsement, do i need to sit the CGFNS even though I have passed my NCLEX already?" maybe they interpret it as you havent done anything yet? which i know you havent but what if???:stone

Good point AussieRNinHI, WI may have misinterpreted what Zonnenschijn meant. I will ring the board and pose that question seeing that I am licensed to California and in any case I have a CGFNS visa screen certificate - it would be interesting to see if they want the CGFNS exam from me. Keep you posted. Just an intresting exercise. No offensive to you Zonnenschijn - I hadn't called when I emailed you, slept through my alarm.

I know, it certainly doesn't make sense and yes i said exactly the above to them and still the same answer.....No matter how i apply, endorsement or straight application they require the CGFNS. They seem to be one of the last few states that require the CGFNS exam and cert.:banghead:

If you have not worked for 2 consecutive years out of 5 years as an RN in the US then BON in WI requires the CGFNS exam and cert....:nurse:

Each BON will have their own requirements. The same goes for NY that even if you have a license with another state and foreign trained nurse you still have to have CVS done. If they require CGFNS exam as part of their requirements then nothing will change their mind unless they decide they no longer require the CGFNS exam as have some of the other states. VSC is a requirement of all foreign nurses if obtaining a visa to work regardless on type of visa with exceptions of spouse and fiancée visa or spouse is applying for initial visa and you can work on their visa

What does CVS mean? I gather VSC = Visa Screen Certificate!

CVS= Credential Verification Service and only applicable by NY and CGFNS do all the chasing for documentation

Hey Brissygal, yes would be interesting to find out :-) :typing

I applied to the BON here (while I was living here) took nearly a year as i did not have enough hours in a couple of subjects, in which i had to redo! I went back home and did this through Deakin Uni. After this was all done it was smooth sailing.

Hi AussieRNinHI,

You mentioned you were starting your assignment in Alaska. I wonder if you are doing travel nursing? If so, may I know how difficult the process becomes if you are educated in Australia? I understand that as a foreign grad, you need to be screened and registered with the BON in the state you want to work in? So if you are a travel nurse, do you have to be Ok'ed by the BON of every assignment destination?

BTW, I do have a US green card, but I didn't think it would make a difference in terms of being able to work as a nurse in a state, other than the fact that I don't have to worry about visas.

Thank you in advance!
