Hey, any Aussies working in the USA?
I am a travel nurse, and currently my travel assignment is in alaska. My contract is finishing soon and i am looking at going somewhere else. As for the different BONs here, how difficult it is depends on the BON's rules and regulations, normally you can just get an endorsement. Initially though you have to apply to a state where you want to go and work, you can do this by either going to the BON's website and reading the requirements or contact them for more info. via email or phone. Each state require you to sit for the NCLEX exam before you are licensed to work as an RN. You must satisfy the requirements. I did not have enough clinical hours in maternity and psychiatric. i had to redo both subjects and it took me 1 semester. Deakin University in Melbourne offers courses for you to be able to do this, it is designed for nurses from Australia wanting to work in USA. I do not know what Latrobe or University of Adelaide is like. i have never been to Adelaide, but have heard that it is very pretty. Sorry i cant be of any help with this regard.

Hey, any Aussies working in the USA?
Hey Tyler! I am actually in Alaska :-) At the time i created my nickname I was in Hawaii. Saying that, I have never worked in hawaii as a nurse. I have had a job offer in honolulu, ages ago, but was not licensed then. It was a pity, because the pay was pretty good. With regards to working in Australia, I know there are certain requirements, but im not sure what they are for overseas nurses. I went back last year for 10months and i worked in Brisbane, mainly Wesley Private hospital and St Andrews hospital (check this link, its of the Wesley Hospital, its the largest private hospital in Brisbane, i enjoyed working there, I worked in OR there and saw some of the people i worked with in this clip ) .Agency nursing tends to pay more, because you do not get benefits that normal hospital staff get...you know, like sick leave, Annual leave (PL). For example as staff, for my level, I would be getting $30-31/hour, as agency, i would be getting 40-45/hour. Depending on what you earn, you fall under a certain tax bracket, normally its usually 30 cents for every dollar. Taxes will automatically be taken out from your pay. There are forms to fill out, you will need a tax file number. the company or hospital you work for should provide you these forms. The company i worked as an agency nurse in Brisbane was "australian recruiting" you can look them up on line. The lady who deals with the nurses is really nice and im sure she would be able to help you with regards to your questions, as they do hire internationally. i can give you her name if you like. The standard of health care is pretty high. We have a body called "The Queensland nurses union" who are proactive for nurses' rights. This is their website: http://www.qnu.org.au/ and this is of the Queensland nursing council by the way (for getting your nursing license).. you can contact them and find out about what you need to do http://www.qnc.qld.gov.au/contact/contact.aspxThere's no question about not having fun in Brissy! there are lots to do, and lots to see! There is around 1 million people there, and its close to the Gold Coast, you can either drive there or catch the train. There is a train system in Brisbane. Brisbane itself is beautiful... To fly to sydney would only take you an hour. If you want to scuba dive then while you are in Queensland you need to go up north to Cairns, you have great access to the Great barrier reef there!! Overtime is possible, and i do think, they work 12 hour shifts in ICU dont quote me on that though! :-) Im sure you will have lots of fun and fall inlove with Australia! Anyway, i hope some of this info helps you!! :wink2:

Hey, any Aussies working in the USA?
Hi Straight4.. The only stumbling block i had was when I had applied to the BON and they came back saying i did not have enough hours in 2 subjects, so until i did them and passed them i was not able to sit the NCLEX exam. I already had my greencard since my husband is an American. I started to hunt for travel positions while in Australia. I did not come across any difficulties looking for a travel company and finding a job, there were so many, .. i dont know if it is because of my experience, or just luck, but i am actually at the end of my 2nd 13 week contract with the same hospital... they are a good bunch to work with, and have been really accomodating and nice.

Us nurse trying to work in Australia...
Depends on what level you are regarded as when you are eligible to work there as a nurse. It goes by years of experience. Im from Queensland so i can only go on with what is nursing is like over there. Agency generally pays you more, as you are not entitled to what a normal RN staff would be getting. Agency rates varies.. i was getting paid $40/hour, then from 12midday up it goes up to $45/hour. Weekends are like $55/hour Sundays are few dollars more. Public holidays are like $100/hour. If i worked as staff, i would be getting paid for my level, around $30/hour base rate. Time and half for OT, saturdays at time and half, sundays time and 3/4. public holidays you get paid automatically even when you are off, it is not taken off your personal leave (this was when i was still in australia, dont know about now, but i think its still the same) and if you do work the public holidays, there are 3 or is it 4..hmm cant remember now, you actually get paid double time.

Can a US RN work in Oz for a year or two?
personally i love Brisbane :-)but i am biased because im a queenlander :-), its not as big as Sydney, but its lovely just the same.It doesnt cost an arm and a leg to fly to Sydney, there are quite a few airlines that fly to the capital cities, so competetition is fierce. It cost me $150 return to fly to Sydney in Feb. this year.

NZ RN wanna go to the States......................
i doubt Australia gives bonuses to nurses. i never got one with my 11 years of nursing there. Both public and private sectors of hospital differ in pay rates, with the public sector paying more per/hour, not by much though, it used to be around 1 dollar more in the public, i dont know about now though! The nurses union always fights for more fair wages and fair treatment for nurses over there. i know just before i left Australia, i was working for the public sector and you can take annual leave at half rate, used to be 5 weeks per year but now you can take 10 weeks at half rate! and long service leave is 6months at half rate or 3 months full pay. They also have salary sacrificing in Australia, where you can havecertain things paid like utility bills/rent/mortgage from your pay, before you get taxes taken out, as a result you get taxed less overall. Salary sacrificing is a little complicated to explain and im not sure if they have changed the rules since i left and I am not sure if you are eligible for it if you are not a citizen of Australia. They are stringent on 8/10hours breaks where you must have 10 hours break in between working. I worked in OR there and if we were called in and we havent had a 10 hours break before our shift starts the next day, we actually do not go to work until we have a 10hour break and you still get paid for the time youare not there. its called fatigue leave. so for example if you finsihed work at 6pm and you got called in at say at 1am (you havent hd a 10hour break) and did not get to come home until 3am, then you take your 10hour break from 3am. So if you start work at 7am, you dont actually have to be at work until 1pm in the afternoon! This is in OR, not sure about the wards, but i think they work the same way if they have to work OT

Hold one, before you do anything lol! i had to go through the same thing as you!! Deakin University in Melbourne deals with this sort of thing. I did psych and maternity as i did not have enough clinical hours. It took me 1 semester to do both subjects and you can do it through distance education. Its definitely worth it, and the lady who is in charge of this is so lovely!! Pvt msg me if you can and i can give you her contact info!!

Hello Australian Nurses!!
woah woah woah!!! You will find the standard of nursing practice in Australia is very high! I believe nursing is team work and RN's do get a patient load/s. Nursing assistants, equivalent to CNA's here work mostly in nursing homes. There are mainly RN's and Enrolled nurses ( similar to LPN's)who work in hospitals. If blood and guts and the like disgusts you, maybe you should evaluate whether nursing is for you?

Meditech ORM use for specimens/cultures?
Hi, I dont know what you mean by OE or CDS.. but here is what we do, we go to the "order entry" screen, where we type in "L" for order status, then we punch in the name of pt, then it should automatically put under it the ordering/attending doctor THEN type in "C" for charges for order source. For entering an order for pathology, as we use the same screen for charges and everything else..where it says "category" (when you hit enter after "order source) you type in "PATH" for pathology, then enter key, where it says procedure you type in "SPEC", enter key again, then it should automatically fill out the rest, you keep hitting enter until you go to where it says "preop dx.... procedure" (fill these out according to your data), then hit the enter key until you get to "copy report to DR." if pt has own physician, normally you type in his/her name. You then go down to where you enter the specimen. under the number sign # we usually put in A,B,C or D dpending how many specimens you have. when you hit enter it will go to "Source" , so we enter where the specimen comes from, and then "type" is "H" for histology.. thats it. I hope i answered your questions.. for culture swabs it different.. we enter "micro" instead of "Path" we do anaerobe, aerobe, gram stains are normally included in exam.:typing
