Hello everyone, I will be starting the new PMHNP program at Herzing University in September. Trying to see if there is anyone else that will be starting the program so that we can connect. Since it's a new program, there is no topic about this specialty and maybe this can provide opportunity for potential students to discuss.
Hey all! I’ve been following this thread as after researching many online PMHNP programs I have decided on Herzing and hope to start with the Nov. 1, 2021 cohort next year after completing my online RN to BSN at GCU in September 2021. I’m curious how everyone has been doing with attempting to secure clinical placement, and if anyone is in the state of California. I checked the California state board of nursing website and it looks like Herzing is accepted as an out of state program for NP clinical placement - as of this month at least, I hear that was recent. I am relocating to California from Washington in May and definitely will not have the kind of connections I would if I had lived and worked there previously. How do you all go about finding preceptors? Thanks!

@studentnurse2018 Hey! I took one course at a time this fall. So I had advanced patho the first 8 weeks of the semester and now currently taking advanced pharm for the second half of the 8 weeks of the semester. Advanced patho was not too bad. For that class, we had a discussion due every Wednesday, two responses to other ppl's discussion due every Sunday, and a quiz due every Sunday (you have 15 mins to answer 10 questions). We also had two papers as well. As for advanced pharm, this class requires more work and studying. We had two discussions due every week (one on Wednesday and another on Friday), two responses for each discussion (so 4 responses total each week), we have a quiz every week (which is super hard...each question is a paragraph long and you only have 90 seconds per question, so you have 30 mins to answer 20 questions), a shadow health lab assignment which is an online activity (it actually makes learning concepts a lot easier), and have a total of 4 papers. Both teachers have been very helpful and amazing. You will love the program! What other classes are you taking in Spring?

@KJ Otto Hey! You made a great decision! Herzing has been great so far. As far as preceptors, it all depends on your own connections. I would recommend that you start networking right now to see if you can get in touch with any psychiatrists/psych NP who can precept you in the future and lock them down. You will also have to do a clinical with a family med/internal med/family NP for the advanced physical assessment class, so have that secured too just for a semester. The school did not help me find anyone. We have to find someone ourselves just like all other schools out there, unfortunately.

@Denise Durham Hi Denise! So far, it's been a good experience! I really do not have any major complaints. The only thing I don't like about the classes so far is that they don't really "teach" you. They expect you to read the textbook and have to teach yourself. But I guess this is how all online schools are going so far. They do not provide you with any comprehensive notes, just a few PowerPoint slides just touching a couple of key concepts. Luckily, I still have my notes from nursing school from almost 10 years ago, and they have been tremendously helpful, so I do not have to read the book in detail.
I am taking Health Policy & Management and Organizational Systems and Behaviors also in the Spring. For the weekly quiz, how do you study for them if there is no teaching or adequate powerpoints?
@gamecockgurl, MSN, RN, thanks for the information. Sounds like it was when I did my Master’s. Except that I demonstrated applied knowledge through my papers. No tests. Does that sound about right? They at least provide the resources to obtain the information. I’ll post here how things go for me. Maybe it will help others like this has helped me. Thanks so much!

@Denise Durham You're very welcome! It is kind of like that as far as papers and discussion posts go, however, we do have quizzes every week which are timed. The only resource they provide you is the 3-6 slides of PowerPoint they provide you (which is not enough information) and you also have your textbook.

@studentnurse2018, luckily the teacher for the advance patho class derived her quiz questions from her PowerPoint slides, so those were easy (but I still read the chapter summaries and skimmed through the textbook to make sure I am learning). However, the advanced patho quizzes are no joke. You literally have to reach each chapter (which I do) and I still made an 80% (and those are one of the highest scores). I see a lot of ppl failing their quizzes. But I guess the points we get from the papers, discussion and shadow health labs helps even out the score so I'm sure they are all passing.
