Hep B Titer "negative"

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hi everyone,

I'm new to this board and will HOPEFULLY be entering the Nursing program in the fall at our local Community College. I say "hopefully" because I'm accepted, but just got my Hep B Titer and it came back negative. Anything less than 10 is negative and mine is 9.21! I got to Booster today so now I have to wait 6 weeks to know if I'll be in or not. If it comes back negative again, I do not have time to get the full series done again, as I have to have a + titer recorded before I can begin in the fall. I'm just beside myself right now. The doctor's office was supposed to do this titer back in May of '11 when they did my Varicella and MMR titers. I thought they did, they called and said everything was "fine" but never said anything more, and sent my record to the school. Until I got my Orientation Checklist and called the office to double check and make sure everything was on my Physical form did I find out it wasn't actually done. I figured I had nothing to worry about since I had the series done in 2009. What are the odds the Booster will up my levels enough to pop positive in 6 weeks?

Sorry for the babbling, I'm a little freaked out right now.

I am in the same boat. I am getting my booster in the morning and will hopefully have a positive titer in time for class to start. Mine was in the 8 range. Good luck to you!

Me too. I just got my first round yesterday, 2nd will be in July and 3rd in December. Problem is, I start clinicals in September. I am going to ask at orientation on Friday and find out what I can do.

I'm so sorry to read about your situation. I'l have to get my physical and titers done soon and this is the kind of thing that freaks me out. I found out last year that I didn't get the full hep B series as a kid, but luckily there was still time to get all the shots. I also got a booster for DT but I didn't get a pertussis booster, which I'm worried about now. :|

My classmates are having the exact same problem. The school just made them sign a waver and start the series. They still started clinical with everyone else. Please make the call to your respective schools before fretting. I know my school is not the only one with this policy. I knwo that your paperwork probably says that "Positive titers are due before clinical", but that may not be a condition to kick you out. It may be a special circumstance to work out with you.

I was going to say the same as grownuprosie, contact your school. Trust that you are not the first student to encounter such a thing, and since the hep b series can take months to get, they usually have policies that help you start classes on time, with proof that you have started it. Talk to the school about it.

simple, just sign the a hep b waiver form. :D

Yeah, I was planning on signing the waiver and letting them know that I'd started the series. I am not going to call because it's only 2 days until my orientation. I can find out then.

Thanks

Thank you for all of the replies. I had my Orientation on Tuesday, everything will be fine. I had the full series in 2009 so they aren't worried about it. She said her gut feeling is that because I'm so close, I will be immune at the next Titer. If not, she said to get the second shot and we will go from there. However, if I hadn't gotten any shots or was in the middle of my first series and wouldn't be done before September, that would be grounds for being dismissed from the program. She said you HAVE to have proof of a full series PRIOR to September. Of course, this is at my school. It may differ at other schools if you are actually in the process of getting the series.

Good luck everyone! :)

I found out today that I'm good. They just want to make sure that you've started the series before school starts! No worries.

I'd say that your 2009 series was proof enough that it was done.

My school requires that you submit proof of titers before registration OR have the first 2 shots in the series done prior to start of classes and then I will submit a note from my Dr. with the date that I am scheduled to get my last shot.
