HELP! Struggling on AP class

Published

Hello!!!

I am taking a online summer AP 1 class 8 week long, this is currently the 5th week and my grade keeps getting lower and lower with each test :( I currently have an 82%. (The nursing schools in my area require a B or above in all pre-requesites) There is still 2 quizzes left and 1 final which i doubt I will get full points on :(. I am not going to make any excuses for myself but the teacher sucks. She gives us no study guides for the tests, all the other students are also complaining in our online discussion of their grades and her teaching style.

I just feel like this is the end !!!!! I am not even in a program yet and I am nervous and have anxiety. I've read that these "AP" classes are made to filter out the weak. Man I have all A's in all my other pre-requesites. I only need my AP's and then I can start applying for nursing schools. But I am doubting my own intelligence and just feel so defeated.

Em I studying incorrectly? I do a lot of reading and homework and I have a white board where I draw.

I am 27 and I have 2 kids, I took this summer AP class to get closer to my goal.

I'd like to hear some on your stories. Or what do you think I can do different?

Thank you all,

Make your own study guide? Notecards with questions? Blank diagrams where you quiz yourself on recalling each part?

I realize that's "old-school" and all, but one way or another you need to memorize the information.

I did terrible in Anatomy myself and it was entirely my fault. But that's neither here nor there.

A lot of people suggested using an anatomy coloring book - perhaps worth a try in your case.

A&P is not a class I would have chosen to take a summer version of. There's just too much information ...especially with the lab. Nursing school is a LOT of self-teaching, so get over the "my teacher sucks" thing before you make it into a program for the sake of your own sanity. And like the previous poster suggested, make your own study guides. Base them off everything said in class and everything in your book.

I've never received a study guide made by someone else. For me personally it wouldn't be as effective as making it myself anyway. You learn a LOT when you have to read closely enough to read each paragraph and see if there are a couple of key thoughts you can turn into questions. Then you have to write the question. Make all the question cards first. Then you get round #2 by going back through all the same material and writing the answers on the backs of your cards. Then start memorizing. Don't just look at the cards. Memorize 10 at a time or so, then move on to the next 10.

You want to know A&P anyway. You need to know it. IMO it's not enough to simply read the text and notes unless you have a photographic memory.

Good luck.

I also wrote my own study guide, then rewrote it, then typed it. The repetition helps the information sink in, well, it did for me anyway.

This is a good technique! I will try this :)

Make outlines. If you can get together with another student and quiz each other using your outlines, even better.

I know I regret taking it for summer NEVER AGAIN!!, but oh well I'm just going to sink my nose in the book!!

You are right I just have to rely on myself If i want this !! :/

[COLOR=#1750ff]Did that work for you? the coloring book? Im going to print out some pages right now,

In your case did you just retake it? What do you think might have been the problem with your ituation ? I think I need to change the way I study :/

There is a great A&P lecture series on YouTube called AnatomyGMC. I used it to help with my online A&P and it saved my life. She is really great at explaining things.

Does the professor have online office hours? If so, have you reached out to her? If not, have you tried just sending an email to ask for advice or extra credit opportunities? At this point you should be living A&P at every free moment. Practice with apps, watch YouTube videos while washing dishes, use your kids as "patients", memorize mnemonics, use NCLEX resources, listen to lectures or podcasts on your phone while driving, make flashcards, Google other A&P classes and use their study material. You may feel that she's not a good teacher but there are so many resources that are available that you can basically teach yourself...you just have to do more work. There has been minimal change to the material throughout the years so use what's out there and earn your spot in nursing school!
