HELP! Struggling on AP class

Published

Hello!!!

I am taking a online summer AP 1 class 8 week long, this is currently the 5th week and my grade keeps getting lower and lower with each test :( I currently have an 82%. (The nursing schools in my area require a B or above in all pre-requesites) There is still 2 quizzes left and 1 final which i doubt I will get full points on :(. I am not going to make any excuses for myself but the teacher sucks. She gives us no study guides for the tests, all the other students are also complaining in our online discussion of their grades and her teaching style.

I just feel like this is the end !!!!! I am not even in a program yet and I am nervous and have anxiety. I've read that these "AP" classes are made to filter out the weak. Man I have all A's in all my other pre-requesites. I only need my AP's and then I can start applying for nursing schools. But I am doubting my own intelligence and just feel so defeated.

Em I studying incorrectly? I do a lot of reading and homework and I have a white board where I draw.

I am 27 and I have 2 kids, I took this summer AP class to get closer to my goal.

I'd like to hear some on your stories. Or what do you think I can do different?

Thank you all,

UPDATE!!! the 8 week class was over yesterday!!!!! but with all your advice and study tips I was able to get a B in the class !!! YAY ! I did exactly what you all told me to do, youtube, my own study guides, i printed diagrams, i spoke to the professor, everything you guys said I did. lol

Just thank you for being helpful and supportive It feels great knowing that there is a community out there that knows the struggle and can help :)

I just got done taking a 6 week A&P II class in the summer and it was A LOT OF WORK! In the beginning, I was struggling around an 85%, but eventually I got my desired A-. I never read the textbook. I focused soley on the the powerpoints and everything that my prof said in class. If I was confused on a topic, I would go to the prof. office hours, go to supplemental instruction, and go to tutoring sessions. I also watched youtube videos, particularly crashcourse. I took advantage of all the help I could get for such a short amount of time. Time is extremely valuable when taking a biology class in the summer. I studied on average 15 hours during the weekdays and 12 hours on the weekends because every Monday we had an exam. It helps to set a timer to keep track of the amount of "real time" that you put into studying. Also, try re-drawing/re-writing any of the diagrams and notes that the prof. discusses. Hope this helps and happy studying.

6 week ? JEEZ and I was crying because mine was 8 weeks lol

WoW I am soooo amazed that you got an A WAAYYY TOOO GOO!!! Yes I hear you on that 15 hour a week study time boy that was intense! !!! Aren't you happy that's over now lol

:(

Now Im off to A&P ll, I will definitely be on that crash course channel.

Are you going to apply for nursing schools now?

Personally, I don't think you should be taken the class online and in such a short duration. From my time being in the class (I was cut short because of surgery) it was a lot of drill run. The main class itself wouldn't be too hard, but the labs were often the hardest.

Since you're in the class already, I'd recommend lumping each together. Take 2 or 3 hours each day to study the class and extra to study lab. For me, the hardest was the skeleton. The hardest part here is that you don't have a physical one to see, so I'd suggest buying one. Play with it, feel each notch. I broke it up into pieces that way. Muscles are easier by the fact you need just description. Memorize the location by reading it and matching it on the body, for example. I can't say more since I had to leave by the heart, but all I can say is that I applaud you for doing this online

Yes I am with you!! The skeleton memorizing was the most difficult for me! After I failed the skeleton quiz I posted this post because I thought there was no more hope for me in this class:( haha your right I feel like if I had a skeleton I would have done much better.

I am extremely happy that it's over. You have no idea lol. The whole reason why I took A&P II in the summer was because I planned on starting nursing school this October, but when I went to my interview for the program, they said that the cohort is full. So now I have to wait until next February to start the program. I rushed to get all my prerequsites done and now I have to wait when I could of taken another science prerequsite this fall. *sigh*

When will you apply for the program?

Nice you are up there way to go almost in!!! Have you considered applying at other schools or do you have your eyes set on that one? I will be applying for schools this winter so right after A&P ll. I am going to apply to multiple community college programs here in Oregon, just because I am getting old (27) and I have 2 kids. I want to get this done I've been sitting on it for way to long. I need to start studying for the KAPLAN, does your school require that?

I already got accepted to the nursing school, it's just that they rolled over my application because the cohort was already full. I applied at 2 nursing schools and got accepted into both. One of them was in Denver and the other was in my hometown. So of course I choose the one that was closest to me. I took the TEAS not the KAPLAN. Where I live, it is very competitive so I'm just glad I got accepted.

If nursing programs are competitive in your area it will probably be worth retaking unless you can somehow salvage your grade with two quizzes and a final (if anything like mine, that's at most 150 points out of 1000+). If I were you I would study my butt off for the next two quizzes - you need to find resources for the material that works for YOU, there are tons and tons of resources online (google the crap out of key words and chapter titles), including study guides that you can download and online quizzes made by textbook companies who have free sites for their AP books. Download the quizlet app and find or make flashcard groups yourself. What you should NOT do now is give up on this class. Not putting in the effort for this last part will drag your grade down further and look even worse on applications, even if you retake it.

And if you end up having to take AP I again, don't stress. It might set you back a semester but it's that or being unprepared for nursing school, which is likely just not an option at all. Before you take it again, PREPARE. Just because you've been through the class once does not mean you get to slack off and do half of the work. Find the resources that work for you BEFORE you take it again and put them all in your bookmark bar or on your computer. Rewrite the notes you took for this current class and study them before every lecture. Take notes in every single class and make sure you're listening for what the instructor emphasizes. Listen for what you don't remember and wrote it down with an asterisk next to it. Listen for what you DO remember and make a mental note of it- and still write it down. Honestly, what you do all depends on how you learn best. Sometimes we need learning experiences that are hard like this to teach us how our brains work. It'll be okay, even with this setback.
