Help! Scared to call HR to take back acceptance of job offer

Published

Hi! I need help! I've been agonizing for weeks now. I got 2 job offers both in intensive care unit. One per diem and one fulltime. I already accepted the fulltime position, did the medical test and finalized HR papers. The orientation starts on feb 2. I just got a job offer today for the per diem position at a hospital a lot closer to my house. I've been waiting for that per diem position and I thought it will never be offered to me, hence I accepted the fulltime position. Their orientation falls on the same date. The per diem position is very convenient for me and that is what I really want. But how do I go about telling the other hospital about my decision? I really dread doing the phone call. I'm sure HR will be very mad at me!

Better to do it now before being oriented etc. Just tell them a better fit/more convenient opportunity came up. I wouldn't worry about it, happens all the time.

I don't think they'll be mad, they will appreciate that you notified them asap so they can choose another candidate to take the position. Good luck!

I don't think they'll be upset if you notify them before orientation. It might upset them if you don't show for orientation, or go through orientation and then quit to take the other.

thanks a lot for your response. I know I have to do the phone call, I just needed some boost. I just feel bad because my husband works at that hospital. I was just going to go ahead and work there despite it not being convenient for me but my husband was adamant that I dont work there if there are other offers better suited for me. I have 4 years ICU experience and I've been looking for a job for 3 months already. Our finances were getting scary that's why I accepted the 1st job offer I got. I applied at 25 hospitals, got 4 interviews and accepted at 2. I never thought it would be this difficult to find nursing jobs.

Call tomorrow and get it done. You'll be fine and they will be as well. Glad you found a job better suited to your needs. :)

If you needed the $$$, why would you take the Per-Diem!!!

Did I miss anything?

I feel the same. Why take a per-diem job if you were offered a full-time position?

Around here PD are the first to be called off for low census, first to be floated, etc etc....and get no benefits/PTO to boot. If I wanted to be sure of cash, FT is the way to go, especially with hiring freezes and cutbacks all OVER the place (and expected to continue).

that's same thing i was going to post. the perdiem nurses at my job are getting NO hours at all. one nurse in my dept only worked one shift this past pay period and she used to work 40hrs week! if you need money the last thing you need is a perdiem position.

Glad that you found a job that your excited about. If you want the per diem postion at the closer hospital go for it... Just explain it to the HR at the other hospital.. Good luck!

They probably won't mind as much if you let them know right away, don't orientate first. Even if they make a big deal out of it, they'll forget it shortly and you'll be gone anyway. I would take the job that was better suited to me. I've spent the last 5 years doing what worked for everyone else.
