So, one of my professors just posted some optional review material to prepare us for next semester. I have done a couple of the assignments. So far, I have came across a couple questions that I am unsure about. If anyone can help a fellow nursing student out I would really appreciate it. :)
1) You are caring for a woman who is admitted in active labor. What info is most important for you to assess to avoid respiratory complications during labor and delivery?
a. Family history of lung disease
b. Food or drug allergies (Drug allergies = anaphylaxis?)
c. Number of cigarettes smoked daily (we can't assume client is a smoker, right?)
d. When the client last ate (Could cause vomiting/aspiration?)
2) A woman delivered her infant son 3 hrs ago. She had an episiotomy to facilitate delivery. Which of the following would be your most appropriate action?
a. Place an ice pack on perineum (I read this is crucial during first 24 hrs)
b. Apply a heat lamp
c. Take client for a sitz bath
d. Administer analgesic medication as ordered. (I think this is the answer)

Im not in OB yet...start next qtr, but I would have chosen D for the first one b/c if she has to have an emergency c-section, they need to know. And I would have chosen A for the 2nd one. The ice pack is to help decrease swelling and also provides some pain relief, and when I think of Maslow's I think swelling(decreased perfusion) more important than pain relief. But that's just my thought.

So what are the answers?

Yes, but the swelling isn't due to a decrease in blood perfusion, it's due to trauma. I would choose D for that one. I have had OB but thats a strange question to me. An ice pack would be appropriate as well though but I would still choose D but who knows? My nursing brain has shut down for summer lol

I would choose d for the first one due to possible c sections and a for second one cause ice pack is usually first choice for episiotomy.
so what are the answers?
i am waiting for my teacher to post the answer sheet... it could take a while.
I thought it was the ice pack too. Every book I look in says it is priority during the first 24 hrs.
I just finished OB and ice pack was stressed over and over for episiotomy and perineum care.

1. D. My rationale is that we are dealing with the here and now. The next option would be about allergies. Could be either
2. A. Something you can do without MD order. Heat and sitz baths are old fashioned and no longer recommended due to risk of infection. The next best choice would be medicate as ordered.
Would love to know how far off I am!!!
