Hi, dear all,

I have studied nursing in health school for 4 years after my middle school, and I have worked for more than 6 years as a nurse in my country.

Furthermore, I have university diploma (no bac. degree) of English language; My Tofel result is 610, and IETLS (A) is: 7.

I could speak three languages.

Now, in Montreal, for months, I have nothing to do, because:

1. The nursing organisation here refused me to register as an RN, for I don't have high school record. But in my country, most nurses don't have high school educational background.

2. The nurse assistant organisation told me I have to wait for at least half a year for their evaluation of my diploma...

3. When I try to apply the nursing course in both colleges and universities, I was told to wait for the result of evaluation and also study the prerequisite courses in the high school.

I would like to go to B.C, perhaps it will be easier and quicker for me. Could someone give your precious instruction, thanks! I just couldn't pay the high living cost for just watching the nurse shortage everywhere around me.

Wow it sounds like your really in a pickle. Not being from Canada I cannot help you. I just don't know. I did want to respond to you thought and tell you I feel for you.........

Hugs and caring,

Freeroad,

Unfortunately I think anywhere you go in Canada will require you to have high school education. Each College of Nurses will evaluate your credentials from your country of origin and decide whether you qualify. Your best bet is to contact those provinces you may be interested in moving to and ask them what your best course of action would be. The College of Nurses of Ontario has been helpful to me in the past, I find them very approachable(more so than Quebec) They have a web site and you can get their 800# and talk to them . Good Luck!

I wonder if they would be OK with you taking the RN reentry program (for Canadian RN's that haven't practiced in 5 or more years) so they can evaluate your nursing skilld, and then take the RN boards to confirm your knowledge. This would take some time, but might satisfy their requirements.

Hi, dear renerian, lalaxton and canoehead,

Thank you very much for your kind replies!

You make me feel not so lonely and cold in my small appartement...

It's so frustrating, after spending almost all the spare time for the college, university study and prepare for the english tests, and the french study as well, I just could not enter the university gate.

Today, the u of montreal refused me, because they don't accept the foreign students.

Caneohead, only the person who has passed the diploma evaluation by the nurse organization could apply the RN reentry or refreshing program, I am not in that group. Right now, I am waiting for the evaluation by the nurse assistant organization, I could probably get the result by next march!

Is that the only way for me: go to take the chemisty, physics, math again in the high school? My god! with my aged brain?

Or it's time for me to change my career, how about the nutritionist? or just translator for english and french? Somebody has the information about two jobs?

Hi freeroad,

You are indeed in a very tough spot. I can relate to it somewhat, 11 years ago I came from The Netherlands, after a 3 year struggle to get all my paperwork organized.

Don't come to BC if you think it is going to be any easier, the RNABC is very hard to deal with. They are very much paper pushers and it is very hard to get real answers out of them. I can however not remember having to give them my highschool papers (remember it is a while ago), the biggest thing was my nursing school papers and the TOEFL and TSE, the last 2 you have already, so that is a good thing.

As for your education, maybe there are some on-line possibilities or by long distance education, they do that a lot in this country.

What about working as a LPN (I don't know if they call it that in Quebec). It might be a bit easier to get that done and work your way towards a RN while there is decent income.

Good luck,

Marijke:p

Freeroad....

I am not familiar as to the highschool requirements in Que, but would they not allow you to test for your GED (General Educational Diploma) which essentially is a grade 12/highschool equivalency test? That way you will not have to repeat full length courses, and will be much easier to fast-track through the school portion. I would also suggest contacting colleges outside of Que, as some have programs to help returning students/foreign students with problems such as yours. In Ontario they also have an ESL (English as a Second Language) program in which they have instructors that could quite possibly help you find the quickest route to solve your situation.

I wish you all the best of luck, and hope that all works out!!!!

Dear vashka25 and Marijke,

Thank you all for your kind replies.

Yes, I am trying to stay in Montreal, since the auxiliary nurse association accepted my file and they will give me a reply this week. Positive or negative, I don't know, but at least, I felt much better now...

I will let you all know the result then, thank you again!
