I have to take a meds. test for consideration for hire. Are new hire hospital medications tests difficult? Any advice. Please help!!!

I had to take on before I started my job. It had some conversions, IV calculations, dosages (how many pills questions), and ans a few syrings to make the corect dosages on.
I am not sure if it is common practice at all hospital but I will tell you what happened to me this way you can be sure to check. I sat and took the medications test. After I finished and gave the test to the person. She looked at the to of the test and noticed I had put down the NICU for my department. She looked at me and said, "you didn't tell me that you are going to the NICU". All I could say was, "you didn't ask me what department I was going into". To make a long story short I had to take another test one for peds. At the hospital I am working at they also have a different test for those on the OB floor. So, if you are going into an area that there may be a special med stuff (example L&D and pit drips). Make sure you can do them.

Med tests on hire are part of the orientation process in most facilities. It is given the first week while new hires are in the book portion of their orientation. It doesnt necessarily determine whether they will hire you though. Unless someone is totally clueless with med math(at my hospital and others in my area) they will go over what you missed with you and possibly have you do some refresher outside of the orientation at home. Then usually will give the opportunity to retake the test. Dont get real freaked out about it. Try to refresh a little, maybe know some of the drugs given to inactivate or reverse overdoses of certain meds (narcotics, heparin, coumadin etc), refresh your calculation math. I dont think they will turn you away, unless you totally blow it, and even then they may "re-educate you" on things you miss. The point of the test isnt to not hire you, its to help you, and them know what you need to concentrate on during your orientation period.

You would think that the dreaded, awful, nclex is enough!! Another test!?! :imbar I don't think I could take another test for weeks!! Nclex has left me dehydrated!!! :stone

Nope not enough. I don't think there is a hospital I've ever worked at that does'nt test you entry and some every year there after. It's just a basic med test. They want to hire so it won't be bad. I don't think anyone has ever failed one before and lost the job because of it. If your going to work around tele your going to have to take a strip test too.

nekhismom, you probably took a job where you didn't need to take a meds test. That is why you didn't have to take one. You think you are smart by doing that.
