Help with NANDA Statement

Evolve: Ackley: Nursing Diagnosis Handbook, 7th Edition - Care Plan Constructor is a good resource for forming your overall nursing diagnosis.

NANDA publishes a specific list of diagnoses for profit. You won't find the list on their website; similar APA guidelines, they sell the complete book every year or something like that.

However NANDA diagnoses are republished all over the internet and in reputable care plan books.

An example of a few NANDA diagnoses that I used in a care plan last term were "Acute Pain", "Impaired Physical Mobility", and "Ineffective Coping".

My school then has us flesh out these vague diagnoses with etiology and manifestations. The general framework is: NANDA diagnosis, related to ABC (disease or morbidity), as evidenced by XYZ (signs and symptoms).

An example of a full nursing diagnostic statement that I used was "Ineffective coping related to loss of vision, personal vulnerability, perception of inadequate control, impaired adaptive behaviors, and problem solving skills, as evidenced by flat affect, social isolation, inability to meet role expectations, poor self-esteem, uncertainty about choices, and deference in decision-making."

My favorite care plan book is Gulanick & Myers. All of the information above was sketched out in the book, making it easy for me to customize it to my individual patient.

If you're moving forward with your nursing education, I highly recommend purchasing a NANDA diagnosis book. I use the one by Ackley and Ladwig.

How did you get into a class you are supposed to take your second semester before you've even started clinicals?

It took us weeks to learn how to write a decent nursing diagnosis. I also suggest Ackley. We have to have Carpenito for class, which has it's points, too- but Ackley will help you more further down the line.

I've seen lots of those do my homework for me posts, but I really don't think Steve's fell into that category-- it's some pretty arcane stuff and he just wanted to be pointed in the right direction.

Exactly, and thank you for this comment. I am not asking anyone to do anything, and only wanted a point in the direction.

This class is online, and the instructor has not responded via email or phone to any of the students (Some of us are taking patho together as well). We have turned in 4 weeks of assignments, and not received any feedback (This is the Associate Dean of Nursing for crying out loud!). The class doesn't have a prerequisite even though it is supposed to be taken in your 2nd clinical semester. Many of us are in the same boat.

I will try to buy a book today as I have many things to accomplish this weekend including school.
